Prop shafts on petrol and diesel XC70s.

Post by bodington »

I just bought a 2004 XC70 D5, upgrading from our V70. The engine had been changed out, as the timing belt had gone on the old engine, so the new one has 20,000 fewer miles than the car.

When he changed the engine out, he left the prop shaft off, he said he was just commuting and not bothered about AWD.

My question is: will a prop shaft from a petrol model fit on a diesel?

As soon as I had posted, I found the answer, then grew more confused.

There are three different lengths: 2150mm, 2155mm and 2160mm. 2150 is advertised for the D5, and 2160 is advertised for the T, but then a 2155 is advertised for XC70 with no extra designation.

ring a dealership and ask. If your getting used parts take a measure tape.

To follow up: it's more specific than just the length. The CV to the engine changed in the later engine models (D5244T4 onwards, so not necessarily corresponding to the facelift or the year of manufacture), so you actually need to measure the length of the original and the diameter and splines of the front bevel on the car.

In other words, looking for a cheap replacement on eBay is a lottery, unless you can physically check it before buying or have a guarantee of the engine model.
