98 V70- What should I do while the engine is out of the car ?

Post by Goupil »

Hi folks,
My 98 V70 2.5T needs a few things done to pass inspection (leaking oil  ) and to be at a true stage 0. Odo is at 337 000km/ 209 000miles
I'm planning on getting the engine out of the car to make everything easier.
Current plan is:
- Timing belt
- Clutch
- oil pan gasket
- oil pan/pickup seals
- rear main seal
- hydraulic engines mounts
- A/C compressor ? (mine is most likely cooked)

Is there anything else worth replacing while the engine is out ? I'd rather take 20min to fix something than have it fail later with the engine back in :D

That looks pretty good. I guess you could take care of the oil pump seal/gaskets. But those things rarely fail. Post pics!!

I would look hard at doing those hard to reach things like water pump, serpentine belt, Idlers, PCV system, alternator brushes (?), and maybe the power steering hoses if they have not been renewed. Those hoses are a real pain to replace when they go bad.

The gasket kit looks cheap, but that might be one of those things that you shouldn't fix if it aint broke :?:
I will have to do a bit of research on that topic

Should I replace the water pump ? I've read that anything but Volvo OEM is garbage, and if it's fine it shouldn't be replaced, is that true ?
Serpentine aren't that bad, did one yesterday on a 850
I replaced the PCV a year 1/2 ago (about 25k miles), I might just buy a new one and replace it if it looks clogged.
Good call on the power steering hoses, I'll go check what state they are in tomorrow

If it is time to service any of the parts I suggested, it would be easier with engine out. If parts are known to be within service life, I would not change them. On water pump, use only Aisin (original Volvo supplier). A water pump or idler failure can take out the timing belt and result in bent valves. Search MVS for replacement intervals.
Also consider coolant hoses while you are apart - hose failure can require a head gasket if you over heat.

and a thorough examination of ALL hoses, heater, power steering, vacuum, check wiring looms for bad spots, clean ground points. Are you pulling just the engine, or eng/trans, up or dropping subframe?
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I would also clean up the engine bay now that it's empty. Oil, dirt, rust etc...

With the engine out it's also a great time to replace the power steering rack, and rebuild the power steering lines. As well as replace all the heater hoses. Plus everything else that's been suggested. Honestly your budget is the deciding factor. I'd also do a compression test, and inspect the intake and exhaust valves seats to see if they need to be replaced.

Hell. Just rebuild the engine, while you're at it :-D

Definitely inspect the PS hoses and PS rack. Much, much easier to do now if needed.

I wouldn't worry about the oil pump gasket/seals.

Adding to the list, front crank seal and cam seals. Might as well tackle all that while the engine is out and apart!

Possibly the PCV too if it hasn't been done.
