Re: Position II fuel pressure - 1999 V70XC
The check valve is a ball with a spring to push it against seat in the pump's out nipple. that is the only pressure regulator. The migration of the regulator from rail to firewall, to right rear and then to pump speed control was all to reduce fuel heating which pushes the ability of containing vapors in a charcoal canister. I have a 72 Monte Carlo that I am getting running for someone after it was stored for 30 years. The smell of untreated exhaust when it runs and the smell of raw fuel any time I walk by the rear of car on these high 90s/low 100s days reminds me of how far we've come.

This thread is from my 2000 V70R AWD sub-frame replacement. You can see the position of the regulator on top of the tank just about the front of the RHR wheel.

Jimmy57: I did the key on/off procedure 4 times and the started the car. Smoke came out the exhaust. It was not black, but was more a gray-ish hue. It stopped within 10 seconds and the car ran as smoothly as 21 year-old 5 cylinder motor does.
Does this confirm your thought that an injector is leaking fuel through prior to the start?

Brian, I am actually a big Gordon Lightfoot fan and his music is much of my guitar=playing repertoire (if you could call it that). My son lives in Canada and is a dual citizen. The 30-something crowd up there seems not to know much about Lightfoot and mostly think he's an old fogey rather than a true artist. When they had their 150th anniversary, the government had him write a ballad which became the Canadian Railroad Trilogy" which is one of my favorites. However, I get the impression that they played it over and over ad nauseum and some people tired of it. When "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" unaccountably became a big pop hit in the USA, I have to admit that it started to drive me crazy. It was a long song, and back then the top ten songs were played over and over on the radio.
Riding across northern Wisconsin seems to me to be a bit creepy because it is pretty damn empty. Up in the northern British Columbia area in Canada there is something I think they call the Highway of Death or something because people (mostly women) disappear up there and they think there has been a serial killer at work for decades. Sometime northern Wisconsin felt like that...
My big experience in the UP of Michigan was when I was working on an archaeological survey team in the national forest. We had to get up at 5 am and hike back into the woods. We were dead tired and often in bed by 8 pm in a cheezy hotel in Iron River, MI. They had a 10pm curfew in the town, and a huge siren that went off a block or so away. It was completely terrifying every night. It was one of those sirens that rotated 360 degrees and must have been there to warn a 50 mile radius of tornadoes or Canadian invasions. It was a long two weeks, and I never saw so many mosquitos and black flies. Other than that, it's a beautiful place.

They caught the serial killer in the Highway if Tears. Horrible Stuff. We saved about 10M by demobbing our NY border guards by putting up signs in Canadian which said “ please don’t invade here”

Flooded from an injector leaking always causes a very rough running engine and obviously black smoke. A little whiteto light blue smoke may be weak valve stem seals or crankcase vent partly plugged and puddling some condensed oil vapor where it burns it on initial start. Any flooded car you ever started, carbureted or injected would do similar; runs with some missing cylinders for a few seconds with black smoke and then clears up when that raw fuel is gone.

Jimmy57: I've started my fair share of flooded motors, including on this Volvo while having ignition and prior fuel pump problems. I feel like I am dropping home values in my neighborhood every time I do something like that.
I know that the Volvos have a more complicated PCV system. Are you thinking that a partial blockage would be in the portion that runs out of crankcase at the top of the motor and down past the injectors?
Take care and thanks for all of your help on this issue,
Brian

Hey Jimmy57!
You had suggested either a partially clogged crankcase vent or weakening valve stem seals for the little puff of white smoke that occasionally comes out of the tailpipe of my '99 V70 XC.
Would weak valve stem seals also explain why the fuel system doesn't hold pressure in the Key II position and takes a little more turning over to fire? One firing, the system holds and delivers a full 57-60 PSI.
Thanks in advance and in retrospect,
Brian

No. Valve stem seals have no relation to fuel pressure.bcfischer wrote: ↑24 Aug 2020, 10:24 Hey Jimmy57!
