CVVT worn out?

Post by 850T5Ritalia »

Hej, when taking the head off a V70 I found the CVVT hub having some play. I made a little video to better show what I mean. It looks to be maybe 1.5- 2mm of axial play. I didn't found any oil leaks. I've seen a lot of people talking about these CVVT things going bad and I was wondering is this one is still usable.

Look at the inside face of the sprocket for oil/residue (opposite side of the yellow hub). As in, the opposite side of where the cogs are, inside the wheel. You may need a small mirror or inspection camera. If there is no evidence of oil leaking I would leave it alone. Jimmy57’s CVVT cutaway thread talks about the max allowable amount of axial play.

I replaced both VVT hubs on one of our P2’s at about 280k miles. Axial play, if I recall correctly, was around .67mm and both had begun to leak. Mine looked much like the play you show in your video.

There is an o-ring inside the VVT (opposite the T-55 plug) that is replaceable, used to be tricky to source. I sourced some well before FCP carried them, but they were incorrectly sized so I ultimately ended up replacing both VVT’s.

Thank you. Ill try to find that O-ring here in Europe first and see if it last for a little longer. Also with the non-spring loaded hubs like mine, if I just put it back lining up the marks from the pully with the cam cover wil it be good to go?

If you did not mess with the bolt that holds the CVVT to the camshaft the answer is yes, you can treat them as if they where not CVVT. If you loosen that bolt the answer is no, you have some CVVT to Camshaft alignment to do.

I did take the CVVT hub loose from the camshaft. I also marked the spot where it was sitting in its most clockwise position when the cams where locked together. My understandig from a couple vids that I watched is that the most clockwise position should be where it lines up with marks on the cam cover. thanks

You are mission steps and it does need to be done with precision. Read the attached PDF.

that play isnt an urgent repair. Mine had similar play in it, i replaced the VVT with a used one after a while and noticed that it fixed the belt moving side to side (walking) and the tensioner needle jumping/pulsing. so its smoother..

Thank you for the instructions. So just to be clear, this video is also missing the steps of taking the gear loose from the hub? Is that really necessary? I marked all those positions and its a non spring loaded hub on my car. So when I line up the marks before putting the belt on its not likely to move.

From what I recall. You can get the Cam cover off without removing a Non-VVT gear from the camshaft but a VTT will catch on the head.
