Can a FWD trans be used in a AWD car? I guess so if you plan to drive it a a FWD only. Not sure if they can be modified to run as an AWD due to the sleeve connector not fitting into the RHS of the casing.

Also check a 98 AWD will fit a 99 AWD car. It might be ok but they changed the drive on the Angle gear and prop-shaft flanges in 99. I'd call a dealer as they can check if they are the same trans. My Vida is down or I'd check for you.

$400 for a trans is fair if there is a guarantee of sorts. Takes 10 hours to swap out according to Volvo so a bad one would be a pain.

Erie Vo-Vo do warrant their used parts so as abscate suggest may be worth asking them about compatibility as well.

If you were closer I would not hesitate to get it from you, but 20hrs round trip drive is too much and shipping would be about the same.
What is the preferred way to remove transmission from the top or bottom? RMS will be replaced as well.

As you are in the middle 'ish of US. Try vandsautodismantlers in Sacramento. With the US$ v's CDN$ even worth trying Chapman motors on Vancouver Island. They specialise in Volvos. Local dealer uses them when new motors/trans are too expensive for customers.

Neil, Thanks for the suggestion,.I did check their websites and none is in stock.
Called places from Car-part.com and seems like sellers do not know what they are selling. Couple of them tried to sell me trans from C70 FWD, 2000 v70r awd. They couldn't verify mileage. Also had suggestion from folks on Volvo forum on using the on from eBay 2000 S70 AWD and replace electronic from my 99 .
On top of it I got a quote from transmission shop for $1700 (remove, repair/rebuild, reinstall)

You would have to check the 2000 V70 AWD is correct if you are using AWD prop-shaft. There was a change in the flanges in 99-00 if I recall correctly. I am also assuming the 00 AWD was a 4 speed auto and not 5 speed auto.

The rebuild with a warranty looks expensive until you realise Volvo charges 10 hours for the remove/refit of the box.

FYI,
I was told that "98 trans has a different TCU and works with a different engine management. It’s more stand alone while the later transmission talks to the ecu and is continuously adaptive." So no go with 98.

Yes, 1999 went to ME7 so I’m sure the TCM got changed there too.
