I would have been the first to avoid a 'base' model a few years ago. Having then spent a lot of time re-building a 5 speed auto base 2000 SE model I now have a greater appreciation of the toughness of the base model as well as the much better fuel consumption. The 5 speed auto is on of the cars that is often derided for the trans being weak. However if they are maintained they can be reliable. I sold that to a buddy who was wary of the 5 speed auto as he had just sold his 5 speed manual 98. Now he says he will be buried in this car. He just loves it!
So each to there own I guess. I would not turn one down if I was in the market for another P80. My parents last car was a 1200 UK pound car I found for them when they needed a car urgently. I found it from Canada on Autotrader UK at a small used car dealer not far from them. They had that 96 base 850 for many years until they stopped driving and loved it.
