Just adding some lube to this old thread.
Both The Duke of Pearl (8 months sitting) and Grunhilde ( 2-3 years sitting) had massive lifter rattle on startup, I got the old oil/ water out, fresh Dino 10W-30 with a bottle of Marvels Mystery Oil in the crankcase and got good and hot at idle
Both cars took 3-5 hours of running to get rid of all the liftertick, eventually
Volvo says keeps revs under 3000 until lifter tick subsides

Now that's interesting. BMW's solution on the N52 is to run the engine at like 6k RPM for an extended period of time to bleed the air out of the lifters and get the oil filled up. Doesn't sound like a great idea considering the LACK of oil, but revving the engine out usually bleeds the lifters out pretty quick.

This engine features hydraulic valve lifters which means that valve clearance is adjusted automatically. It is possible that the valve lifters will produce a ticking sound for the first few seconds after the engine is started, while the oil pressure is increasing.
If the car has not been used for a long period of time, this ticking sound may last for up to 15 minutes. This is entirely normal.
Do not exceed 3000 rpm until the ticking sound disappears.

Could it be that BMW engineers take and aggressive approach and Volvo engineers are conservative?

The changeover happens somewhere in the 99 model year. My 99 came with hydraulic lifters.bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑15 Jan 2017, 18:08(I assume it's a solid lifter car being that it's an RN motor)?

Engine number for change I. Valve train
mechanical lifters commenced from engine number 1817653 and that, for these updated engines:
The intake ports were approximately 20 per larger;
The coolant and oil passages were modified;
The base circle on the camshaft increased by 2 mm;
Valve stem diameter decreased from 7 mm to 6 mm; and,
Valve length and lift also changed.
The intake and exhaust valve diameters, however, were unchanged at 31 mm and 27 mm, respectively.

Right, I think it was late '99. My cousin's '99 has hydraulic, and I BELIEVE my 2000 R actually has hydraulic as well. My old 2000 S70 had solid lifters.
