Also interesting, I just saw a guy on youtube pairing the same unit I ordered and it identified itself as an ELM327 device.

There lots of Android emulators for IOS, Mac OS, Windows and Linux that will run Android apps. The requirements for 850 OBDII are pretty low. Just about any of the emulators will run it. The Dongle is any ELM327 1.4 or higher or a well done clone. Elm327 is compatible with any software that supports it.

I picked up a VeePeak (good reviews and such). If it doesn't work well for some reason I will just use it in my truck. My girlfriend has an old Android I can wipe and use it solely for the Volvo and corresponding dongle if needed.

Original scanner returned today already.
I was going to suggest exactly that. The app is cheap, used androids are plentiful. We will be happy to help walk you through the app if you need the assistance. Its pretty crazy to think some random dude in Sweden programmed this himself. I wish I could do things like that but don't have the time or patience.
Tell me more about this random dude in Sweden who fakes to be me?

Since you are here (and I am very uneducated on the function of bluetooth dongles) will your app on Andriod work with the VeePeak I ordered or will I need the original ELM327 for it to work properly?

Going to give this one a shot with an IOS compatible app just to see what it lets me accomplish on the 4.4 electronics. Might pick myself up a nice cheap Andriod tablet for the the app if needed like Chuck suggested.

I am not going to be sore if I have to buy the correct one as I have plenty of other vehicles I can utilize the VeePeak unit in. I did fall to the trick that I think the IOS function kills my mobile data by connecting via WIFI instead of bluetooth because Apple isn't getting their "Fair" share.

Appreciate the insight Sir.

EDIT: This is the one I picked up since I don't have an Andriod device handy at the moment.

I have heard from users that VeePeak should work. I am just always afraid if there is circulation of bad clones of any brands.

I don't have sorry comment of this IOS and mobile data thingy. I recently acquired 2011 Macbook Pro which was totally dead to get up and running after logic board repairing for week. But still figuring out developing on it sorry.

Ok, here comes the first report. I received my VeePeak with bluetooth 4.0 today. I only messed around with it for a few minutes after we got home from dinner. The device paired to the app immediately.

Currently using the free version of "Car Scanner" It's ok as far as function goes but I will be looking at other apps before I end up buying one. I want the best of both worlds for my other vehicles/the Volvo. Still on board with an Android of some sort so I can utilize Finn's awesome app.

This particular app does not support "enhanced" DTCs so I can't read my ABS light yet (or maybe ever?).

It pulled data pretty well from the sensors but the dashboard portion of this app was meh. The gauges were big and visible but the font was so small the gauge was just a dummy basically if you are looking at it while not sitting still. It was missing things like trans and oil temp but I am not sure if the car actually has those sensors (others may chime in).

Other interesting news, the calculated boost under WOT showed to be spiking to 17.5 psi and settling at around 16 psi. Anyone know how accurate reading the boost via the computer/MAP is? If that's true, there is now way the ECU is stock as boost cut is around 15-15.5 correct? We have owned the car since 2005 when it had 92k miles and no modifications from stock of any kind have been made since then.

I played with the "performance section" of the app. On some dirty road (construction site nearby) it spun a lot at lower speed but returned a 7.2 0-60 time. Again, I don't know how accurate that actually is but the speed on the phone/speedo match up with any of my GPS data.
