Riddle me this -fuel filter - transmission '05 XC70

For the last few months, my transmission has been shifting (and downshifting) somewhat erratically. I had been waiting for warmer weather to attempt a fluid change. Last week, my fuel filter corroded right through; requiring an immediate replacement. Since replacement of the fuel filter, my transmission behavior has drastically improved. Can anyone see a connection? My "text window" (DIC?) which hasn't worked in recent memory, has also begun operating occasionally .

No connection there. Could just be low battery voltage for the rest.

Didn't touch anything electrical. Only other change is sharply colder weather.

fuel filter might have been sucking air a while, causing shift problem due to running lean/lower fuel pressure.

That I thought was a possibility, but wasn't aware of a sensor that might be activated. When my DIC first became activated, it indicated an average mpg of 12.5. This, I assume, resulted from severe leakage through the fuel filter. DIC has currently gone back to sleep and just glows.

Extremes in temperature can result in any faulty contact making or breaking.
After reading a bit about batteries lately, I'm all for throwing a charger onto an in-service battery once in a while.
