I found the rubber damper on after market ones too. Genuine have a sticker on the inner CV joint, may get covered with dirt so rub a little. Genuine also have very thick clamps. If the aftermarket one is not vibrating and the boots are fine , don't replace it.

You can usually diagnose a wheel bearing over an axle by side-to- side swerving. A bad wheel bearing noise will increase when you turn away from it, and decrease when you to turn to it.

Wheel bearings......grisly growls whirrry*

The old axle turns out to be a “GSP”. I’ll save it as it seems fine other than the hole in the boot. Almost certain the noise was from the wheel bearing.
