850 Tool question

Hy Buddies,

I have a question about tools. I've got an issue to unplug the AAC sensor, this one : the screws are in a bad shape, i thrown WD 40 for the night. Hum ? When i will succeed in unscrew these "bolts", i will replace them by 6 pans ones.

By the way, i've seen somewhere something like WD40 to help to unscrew bolts, but the composition was made with a little add of kerosene which seems to be better than WC40. Does it speak to someone ?

Facom make good tools. Either are good, but I prefer the older style as you can add a little piece of pipe to get more leverage. The 'T' type with the plastic may be able to do that but the plastic can crack.

As for WD-40, probably just as well peeing on the bolts. More likely to help remove the rust. Not sure what brands are out there in Europe anymore. Many years ago we had one called Plus-Gas. I think it was out of Sweden or Germany. Worked really well. Over here I use Liquid Wrench or PB Blaster.

Good luck undoing those bolts.

For troublesome small bolts, there is also a simple thing called an impact screwdriver. You can install any kind of bit for allen, torx, screws, etc. It's a small cylinder you hold and smack the end with a hammer. It drives the bit into the screw or bolt so it doesn't slip, while turning it just a hair. A few smacks with that and it usually backs out.

The T-handle will be much more convenient for everyday use, but the L-handle will be more durable and fit into tight spaces better. Best choice of all is a torx socket set, in my opinion.

I agree WD-40 is useless as a penetrant. You can mix 50% acetone and 50% ATF (automatic transmission fluid) for a superb DIY penetrant. Shake vigorously to create an emulsion then apply with a plastic eye dropper.

ATF and acetone! You must have grown up on a farm Erik.

I'll mention a few more esoteric tricks. One of them is lightly sharpening your torx/allen bit on a bench grinder while spinning it, to create a burr on the end, which is super hard and digs into the inside of the recess.

The other trick, which I haven't tried yet, is valve lapping compound on the bit, so the abrasive particles dig in and increase the grip inside the fastener. I'm dying to try this one.

I've got all three types of the tools shown above because they each have their moment when they are the correct tool for the job (plastic handled torx, key torx, and impact screwdriver), all inexpensive Harbor Freight versions (for those in France, Harbor Freight is a low cost tool importer like the Leroy Merlin / Dexter version in France).

There is a good product available in Europe called deblock oil (i think by innotec). It works, a mechanic I know swears by it. It is a lazy man's alternative to ATF and Acetone.

I recommed to get a Knipex Cobra pipewrench (knipex 8701250 for example). They are absolutely great, hard teeth and good bite. I have used mine to open a lot of damaged and or rusted bolts on my 850. Great to have as a fallback option and in limited space.

I have used this type impact tool with surprising results many times. It even works on straight and Phillips head screws.

Added comment: This tool has a 3/8 drive and with some adapters can be used with your 3/8 (or other size) sockets.
