A/C... Yah I know..

2007 Volvo XC90 V8 4.4 with 102k miles
It's in great shape needs alittle tlc here and there but
My A/C ... Here's some symptoms

When started I sometimes starts cool or warm .
Sometimes if warm it can get cool...
Sometimes cool but then can go out .
It does get cold when it rain

The air coming out can get pretty humid
I've checked the pressure...it is at the red .. I've had the truck for almost a year now...
Any suggestions ?
I'm thinking of evacuating and refill the refrigerate, or should I save my money.
Great appreciate any advice .. I've had a few Volvos and pretty confident in my knowledge but I always like to hear a second opinion.. thanks

It’s the control valve in the compressor. Very common, very easy to replace. It’s about 100 bucks from your favorite online volvo parts dealer. Get the system evacuated, replace the valve and have it charged up again.

Check the clutch gap at the compressor. Too large, and you will get the cold-warm scenario

The store can gauges are notoriously inaccurate. Check with a manifold set to measure the low/ high ratio which will point to charge or compressor problems

It’s a variable displacement compressor. The clutch wear in the V8 and 3.2 models is very minimal. The issue is that the control valve is not monitored so the brain thinks it’s sending the correct voltage to move the valve, the valve doesn’t move. I actually don’t believe that the breadclip/shimming trick will work with these compressors.

No solenoid clutch to bread-clip (or tie-wrap) on the V8 and 3.2 motors.

My bet's on the control valve as noted above, having done a replacement myself a month or so ago with excellent results (consistent cold air). PN is 31305844.

just went through this. Was going to replace just the control valve, but the car has almost 130K so I spent $100 more and got a new compressor, installed it, had it recharged and now it is steadily ice cold.

On the V8 you need raise the engine or pull the radiator to get the compressor out..

maybe better to pull the controller without pulling the compressor if possible...
