That noise is coming from the worn VVT hub. Most certainly it is.

What would you suggest? Replace the VVT solenoids?

I would suggest a proper diagnostics before throwing any parts. Especially anything VVT, because they tend to be expensive.

VVT is not moving angles while the engine is idling, solenoid shouldn't affect anything.

We found out what the scraping/tapping was.
The water pump was coming apart. It came apart on my wife today as she was driving. Low coolant light came on, within a minute as she was decelerating there was a pop, and the car died.
The water pump blew apart and shredded the timing belt…so I suppose the motor is junk.
She didn’t run it hot and nothing is being impacted when the starter spins. She tried it before calling me…so since I knew what damage was done was done I spun it myself to hear it.
These are interference engines correct?

Yes but you might get lucky depending on when the timing belt got shred. Others may chime in with advise on what to check next but all might not be lost. Depending on your mechanical ability you may be able to resolve this by taking a compression test and taking the head off. Not a huge deal.....maybe.

At least 2 valves are bent, 1 piston, connecting rod bearing and cylinder sleeve received some damage. A replacement engine could be cheaper than the repair.

Here are some pics of said car. Has been really well maintained (with the exception of water pump failure) and the cleanliness of the car speaks for itself. What do you guys think it’s worth as is?

It’s a $500-700 project at best. It’s beyond economical repair for a driver, so you really market will only be scrap or someone who can take it in with the head swap knowledge.

Once its a non runner, its value is destroyed by the fact that you cannot assess all the other drivetrain components so the buyer has to take all those potential costs into account.
