1998 V70 GLT FWD timing belt change...starting now!

Post by Sufbug »

Actually having lunch first, then we begin!

On the agenda----
New belt, and water pump, and fix exhaust camshaft seal leak....it's a big one.

I'm being told (forum thread, youtube vids, S70 Paul and V70 Shane red wagon squadron) to be careful with the following:

marking the cams, securing cams with zip ties, and having crank at TDC...

Getting belt over the crank pulley....

And taking plugs out, and hand cranking the motor to make sure there is no interference....

It seems you get one shot to get everything in position before you pull the pin on the tensioner....

Anything else to be on the lookout for? Thanks in advance, and HERE WE GO------

Ok, I found the cam timing marks.

Having trouble finding the top dead center marks on the crank pulley.

Help anyone?

If it were me, I'd hose the whole front of the engine down with engine degreaser and brake cleaner once you change those cam seals.

On the timing belt pulley, there's a tooth with a notch on either side. The red lines indicate the notches on both sides of the #1 TDC tooth. It looks like this:

There's also a raised bar on the pulley mount, which is in line with the TDC notch. It's the silver part in the picture.

Hope this helps.

The timing mark on the crank pulley is notTDC , it’s a non interference mark

It can be either the scribed lines or the notches in the inboard side of the pulley teeth. You have to look for both on an old car that may have been reworked
If you set the cams to the angled mark the crank will be close enough to see the marks.

Could you clarify? I'm pretty sure that's the mark for #1 TDC. It's not like there're any other marks on the pulley.
