When the camshafts are in that position the dots line up. The alignment tool is to get the camshafts in the correct position. Which is the datum.

All look okay...so before I install all back on, should I double check anything else Rick?

When I undid the common rail and high pressure pump line this time, diesel didn't drip. I'll have to prime it?

Hi Rick,

I called RAC, the breakdown guys. They used this easy start thingy sprayed through the intake and car started straight away and ran fine. The the guy suspects that I might have got the timing in the high pressure pump wrong. Diesel comes to the pressure pump through the line and then from pressure pump it just squirts, no pressure at all.

I think you got the timing off too, because you started with the wrong datum. Use a camshaft alignment tool. Timing is critical on a diesel because, compression is what ignites the fuel. Go back through it and this time do it by the book.

When removing the pump I didn't pay attention to pump timing. So when I took it off this time, non of the slot (1 and 2 in the pic) was in the middle of the two line marking on the pump.

I tried these steps but wouldn't start:
a. No 1 positioned between two line, then turned crank pulley till camshaft grove aligned with No 1

b. No 2 positioned between two line, then camshaft grove aligned with No 2

Whats the correct way to do the timing?

Thanks in advance

Thanks for your reply mate. Sorry I didn't see your comment while writing the above post. I think I'll be better of giving the car to a garage to sort this out. I'll keep you posted

Cheers

Do you have VIDA? The instructions are in VIDA. If not install it.

Thanks, yeah I have VIDA but struggling to find the instruction for camshaft alignment. Would you know the section number?

Information / Repair / Overhaul. Then find Cylinder head install in the left menu. May sure you have the crankshaft aligned before doing the camshafts.

Nice one Rick

Please correct me if I'm wrong with these steps:

1. Get timing marks aligned to markings on timing belt sprocket and camshaft sprocket dots
2. Remove timing belt (drive belt still in place)
3. Lock the camshaft through the hole behind vacuum pump using alignment tool
4. Lock the crankshaft behind the starter motor using other alignment tool
5. Rotate crank pulley anti clockwise until it hits the alignment tool and stops
6. Refit timing belt, vacuum pump and starter motor

Thank you
