Coolant dye - which one to use?

Post by Geevs »

Hi all,

I'm trying to find a coolant leak in the engine bay, I know it's not coming from the heater core. What kind of UV dye is compatible with Volvo OEM blue coolant? Do I need to flush/replace the coolant after testing? And will the dye change the color of the coolant?

This is the UV dye I can get from my parts store:

Thanks!

what does it matter if you drain it anyway.
gonna have to drain the system to fix it.
You also need the uv glasses and UV light.

a common source of leaks is the expansion bottle, look for white chalky dust , the corners fatigue and will show tiny cracks.

Drying coolant will leave a whitish residue, spotting a leak is easy w/o additives.

Head to the Kitchen and cook up some Quantum dots. Figure out the dilution rate by experiment. Then dope the coolant system with the Quantum dots at the dilution rate. Quantum dots diluted to the correct ratio makes a non-toxic trace dye.

Also... Pull the spark plugs and inspect them / look inside the cylinder. Coolant leaking into cylinder will wash everything to a like new, shiny shape.
