98 V70 NA- base MAF question

Post by scot850 »

My young friends V70 stalled out on her today. No warning. It would hard start and then die with the foot off the gas.

After thinking about it (I don't do early mornings!!) I suggested she pulled the MAF wire and it started up and ran great.

New MAF needed. I believe the correct one is a Bosch #0280217107.

Lots of bad info out there listing this fits a variety of models but can't find it anywhere available locally. Interestingly FCP list another brand now as the OE part number and not Bosch which they show out of stock (Bosch Canada shows NLA).

Before I order this is it fitted to any other cars. I think I recall Rick listing a couple of SAABS.

Only source locally is Volvo which is a 3-4 day turn around and at a 'discounted' $422 + TAX CDN

I thought the 850's were fitted with this but a friend says his 95 has a Siemans branded unit on the NA motor and it is not the same style or fitment.

Any help appreciated!

Neil.

P>S NAPA is trying their contact for a Bosch one but it was $500 CDN!!

Did you try Erie? https://www.erievovo.com/ They're in the States, but maybe shipping won't be too much.

I'm pretty sure all P80s used the same (Bosch) MAF.

Thanks Matthew. I would use US sources but it is the shipping time with the car being out of service. But like I said even the dealer has a 3-4 day delivery.

I will try PnP tomorrow (my wife has our car today as I have the XC70 in bits!) but that is usually the first part to go and they now charge $50 for them!!

Noooooooooooo.

Running welll on lookup table usuallly means vacuum leak, not MAF

Check flow rate on scanner to see if it’s working

But from where? NA has few air pipes for an issue. I have replaced all (well the majority) of the emissions pipework including the carbon canister. So where else?

Throttle body? Car has around 100,000 miles on it (or less). I know that is no guarantee. It suddenly happened today after running fine yesterday.

I can see if we can delay the order a day if it is not too late. That way it would give me a chance to get there and have a look for obvious leaks.

I think "usually" is not the right word here. More like "sometimes." By logic we expect it is either MAF or vacuum leak. Empirically it has always been MAF for me and I've seen it several times on the fora but that's a small sample size. Vacuum leaks usually give P0172, that's more useful info to consider.

Swapping in a good MAF to complete the test will enable you to differentiate.

93-94 is a different MAF
95-98 all the same, turbo or non-turbo. Maybe I am wrong about 95 NA, I've not owned one of those, but I don't think so.

Neil can you grab the MAF from the project 96? Guaranteed it will be the same one.

It was different. It is a Siemens part number I believe. Now maybe on a 96, but then if I pull that one the car won't move..........

Anyway this is the airbox from a 95 NA 10 valve:

Even I was surprised. I need to get the VIN# for the 96 to see if it up-changed. Did the software not change up then too?

The 96 should run w/out a MAF to, just like the 98 does.

OK 10 valve all bets are off - I am only referring to 20 valve engines. We didn't get those 10 V and I don't know anything about them.

95 was Motronic 4.3, 96-97 are transition years from Motronic 4.3 to 4.4., 98 all were 4.4.

But both of 4.3 and 4.4 use the same Bosch MAF.
