Clunking Noise

Post by 02V70 »

When driving, I hear a clunking noise coming from the right front when driving. It usually happens when driving over bumps.

Here is a video that has the noise. There is some other knocking noises (the keys knocking against the wheel) but it happens two distinct times, and sounds sort of like water draining.

I looked at the bushings, and found this.

It looks broken, so would this be making the noise? What is it called, and how would I replace it?

Also, this is what the top of the strut looks like is this normal?
The other side looks similar.

It looks like you need new strut and ball joints, both sides

About $500 in parts

$500 labor, except in CA, where it will $900 labor

Smells like front suspension rebuild coming soon. It is actually not difficult, maybe 5% of your engine adventure. Need a good clamp-style coil compressor, ~$90 on ebay. FCP has a kit with all the hw needed, around $600.

A lot of the auto parts stores have spring compressors available in their tool loan program. You actually “buy” the tool and then you get a full refund upon returning it.

Do I need to get new coil springs too? Or does the strut include that?

No - the springs come off the old strut and go back on the new one, with a new bearing / seat on top.

Curious how did you guys diagnose the strut? The balljoint looks obvious to me. But I haven’t seen the video.

You need to get new upper strut mounts too since you’re already in there.

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

I am replacing the lower ball joints, and it looks like some of the bushings for the lower control arm are not good. Can I replace the control arm bushings by themselves, or should I just replace the whole control arm?

I believe it’s…..

Aluminum control arms, replace bushings/ ball joints

Steel control arms, replace in whole.
