P80 awd parking brake expander and cables

Post by abscate »

I think the P2 platform uses a common parking brake expander but the bastard 1998 1999 2000 awd use a nasty boy

Unlike a simple hook, some Swedish Sadist designed a clevis and pin design which has to be inserted , then tucked into the expander so the pin doesn’t fall out. It is hard to do this working inboard , so I popped the cable off the parking brake lever and set it up outboard.

If Parking Brake Blues was a contest, you would edge me out on rust, but I win on double frozen cables . You do get a half point on shoe sizes.

You guys are just having ALL the fun!!!

Those backing plates are rather crusty. At least the pivot for the shoes is part of the hub and not aluminum like on the P2's!

It is suck a pain that Volvo let the AWD back plates go NLA years ago.

Abscate, grease is the way to keep those pesky dowel pins in place until you feed them back into the guide portion.

The adjuster, Holders, and springs are all the same as P80 parts and are available

17,23,31 are all NLA.., don’t lose your expanders like me. I fudged the clip with a zip tie

The pin is available and I have also sourced a hard pin replacement thst just needs trimming.

I have been looking everywhere trying to find. The expander. PO removed (cut one instead of removed and I found out later) the parking brakes because they didn't work but kept all the parts in a box with new shoes I swear!... Except really it was all there minus both expanders. The two 99s I have aren't awd and are too large. So these expanders are NLA eh?

So need the expander for both sides? There are more V70 XC'x out there than 'R's. Might be worth trying somewhere like VandSautodismantlers in Sacramento as they are dry state cars. They may be willing to pull you parts. Rear dust shields are also NLA so again dry state cars may be able to supply those as well.

I had some spares but I sent one or 2 to abscate so not sure if I have enough to let more go. I will try and check tomorrow afternoon when I have some time and see.

According to the Volvo parts number, it is the same part for FWD and AWD if IPD website is to be believed:

https://www.ipdusa.com/products/10047/P ... 437-121425

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 0-30793437

That is strange that you find they are different?

I have a pair, but my problem is I only have a pair in good condition. I think my other spares I may have sent to another AWD owner.

Maybe you need to re-check the AWD v's FWD are different.

My bad. You clearly said EXPANDER, not ADJUSTER. Again I have spares but only 3 as I sent I think one or 2 to abscate as he had misplaced those for his car. I can give one after I give it a clean up to the cause. Yes the expander is NLA, you were correct.

Otherwise you will need to ask companies like Erie Vo-Vo (East Coast), vandsautodismantlers (West Coast) or even Chapman Motors on Vancouver Island Canada to see if they can pull you a pair. Chapman Motors have just got in a 98 and 99 V70XC's:

Yeah, I pulled and checked expanders on the 2 99 v70s I have out back, as well as the 2000 c70 I stripped for engine and trans a few years ago. I DID manage to fine one expander in the bag of misc. parts the previous owner included, it fell out of the box of parking brake parts. I've searched everywhere for the second one, but based on the fact that a couple other items weren't exactly right or complete, I feel that it likely was lost. I also have a brand new set of Bosch brake pads that don't fit either. To the previous owner... thanks I guess?

Niel, you would be an absolute life saver if you had 1 to spare! I haven't had much luck finding these cars in local salvage yards without them being entirely disrespectfully disassembled. On top of that all the parts I need are sometimes questionable as to their compatibility due to the variances in these goofy but awesome p80 v70 model years.

Also Abscate, you said the awd shoes are different? Wonder if the new shoes included with my parking brake parts are correct or not now... Have correct part numbers?

Awd parking brake shoes are different indeed.

Fcp has a good parts engine with the Volvo numbers. You can see the difference in the cutouts of the shoes in the picture above
