Threadlocker for suspension bolts.

Post by 02V70 »

I am replacing the lower ball joints, and it looks like a bunch of the bolts have red colored thread locker on it. I only have permatex medium strength blue threadlocker. Will this work, or do I need to buy the red high-strength threadlocker?

Note! Screws coated with locking fluid or sealant must be replaced with new when reinstalled.

Blue Loctite is fine. Don't worry.
Just use the correct torque.

I have no idea if any mechanic use locktite which is why most new parts have it preinstalled for this very reason. afaik they all just ugga dugga to get it out of the shop if it gets reused.

ugga dugga is my favorite automotive phrase.

What are people's thoughts on caliper attachment bolts? Anti-seize? Thread locker? It's not on a Volvo. It's not going to be driven a ton, and not in the snow, so I don't see any corrosion problem.

I would just be sure to torque to manufacturer specs.

I use the two new ones that come in the Volvo rotor kit, paradoxically priced at the higher price of the Bosch kit , with the delta being the cost of the two Volvo bolts

In snow country you fight the fact that thread locker and antiseize are mutually exclusive. In dry country, blue thread locker makes sense if you aren’t sure of the torque or fastener quality

I removed a front caliper yesterday, "tight as I can" is how it went back. I don't use thread locker, bad experience not being able to remove the bolts again due lack of space to get leverage and no room for an impact.

The long volvo water pump bolts with red sealer on the thread isn't red loctite thread locker, they'd never come off again if it was.
