Well, it seems there is no depinning that connector. Once I got the outer plastic off, the inner is molded rubber, so I can't split the wires without cutting. Cutting the rubber might be okay if the outer housing would keep it all together. I'll have to look at it closer. Otherwise, I think I'll try the liquid "tape". I've looked at a few videos of people using it, and it looks like some neat stuff.

It may not be pretty but it does what you need it for and you can't really see it to worry about aesthetics. With a bit of practice and thin layers it may end up being a work of art!

Yes, I was thinking of layers, but given what I saw on Youtube, it looks pretty thick. I guess I'll have to see what the particular brand I bought is like to work with.

I'm thinking I may also use tape on top of the liquid stuff. I've also kicked around the idea of cutting the connector off, and asking Mattymoo to leave me power wires hanging out of the module for me to do something with. I have not run the idea past him, Though. At that point, I may be overthinking it.

The connector on my 96 was very easy to depin, just a matter of removing the retaining clip. Is yours different?

That's just the outer case. The wires are still both held together with rubber, so I can't slide heat shrink tubing over each wire to insulate them.

OK, so you've got the hard plastic part off? Typically with a little flexing and rolling the wires between your fingers the deteriorated rubber will just fall away.

That part isn't deteriorated, only what was directly on the wires. I'm not sure the pins would even stay in the plastic, if the rubber was gone. Did you have completely bare pins on yours?

The rubber insulation completely disintegrated in my hands. There was residue left in the terminal shell which had to be dug out with a small screwdriver.

The rubber insulation seemed to play a part in centering the terminals and also the retaining clip in the connector needs something large and soft to bite into, so I added a precise wrap of self fusing rubber electrical tape. Getting this the right size took several attempts.

Ok, well, I think I've got this wrapped up finally. I don't really like I how I did the wires, but it appears to work. I coated the wires with liquid tape, then linearly folded a piece of rubber electrical tape over each wire and then folded again, and then finished it up with regular vinyl tape. I had to cut a slit in the plastic cap that goes over the motor, to get it off, so after putting that back on, I put a piece of vinyl electrical tape over the cut.

I did the former last night, but ran out of light. I got up early this morning and put everything else back together, except one piece....

How is the tab held to the battery tray that captures the positive battery cable? I removed some kind of fastener, but am not finding it. Did it have a nut on the back side of the tray, or does it thread into the plastic? It actully looks like it's designed for a u-clip.

It should have a 'U' clip. I can't recall if it has a nut on the back or it is already threaded. Look at the 4th picture on this link.
