2001 V70 2.4T Under-hood backing is loose

Post by prwood »

The under-hood backing in my 2001 V70 is quite loose and droopy. I had replaced all of the clips that hold it in a few years ago - the clips are all still intact, but the problem is that the fabric/foam/whatever it's made of is just very loose at this age, so the clips can't really hold it on anymore. It lays on top of the engine, power steering and coolant hoses, and other components, which I don't think is the best situation because it just gets dirty and prevents air from circulating properly. My question is: what is the purpose of this backing, and can it be safely removed? Is it for noise reduction, or for protecting the hood itself from engine heat, or something else? Can I just take it off if I don't mind a bit of extra noise, or will doing so damage the hood itself or components attached to the hood?
Cars I've owned:
- 2015 to current: 2001 Volvo V70 2.4T; 2004 Honda Odyssey
- 2007 to 2015: 2002 Subaru Legacy L Wagon
- 2003 to 2016: 2001 Toyota Corolla LE
- 1999 to 2003: 1994 Toyota Camry LE

.
Can't use adhesive and can't use fastners?

What about weaving these or similar including method under the hood structure to secure the pad?

I haven't tried doing anything yet, I just wanted to get some clarification on how critical this component is.

It is insulation. It protects the hood's paint from engine heat and muffles the noise produced by the running engine and its vibrations.

Yupp +1 on that. Keeping noise and heat down is the primary thing why we have it
Shouldn’t be hard to find a car from the junk yard that you can pull the insulation from.

One could do the reflective after-market stuff. If one uses both the adhesive backing and clips it should stay up better then the original equipment.

Never thought of that. Might try it on my X40. The pad has shrunken and it will not reach under all the clips. On the X40 platform the clips are cut from the sheet metal of the hood not the plastic clips that push into a hole.

Not visualizing how to weave a support out of 24" wires. Might be able to weave a support out of fishing line using the clips as anchor points.

Try that car stereo sound deadening material. Noico is one of the more affordable. Not sure how it it will hold up to heat though.

.

Perhaps 2 ways to do this. The hood has a structure support inner panel with large areas stamped out. Weave the rod through the pad and insert under this panel. The other method would be to rest the entire rod directly over the pad and make a few holes in the pad for zip ties to go under the inner panel. This should hold the panel against the hood.

You can go vertical, horizontal or any angle which ever best suits the inner panel. Red for weaving through the pad and under the inner panel. Orange for rod on top with black zip ties pulling the panel flat.
