v70 - engine electrical problem

Post by PaulV70 »

Hi,

The car is a 1998 V70 20v 2.5 turbo automatic on about 95,000 miles. It is RHD. (England).

A few days ago a warning light came on in the dashboard, signaling an engine electrical fault. (the light is a small blue (i think) triangle on the farside of the instrument cluster).

At the same time the car has started to change gear at different revs, for example the engine now only changes up a gear at higher revs, and swapping between 'sport' and 'economy' modes on the gearbox makes no difference.

The engine also idles too high when first started now. The instructions controlling the cars engine revs seemed to have changed. Appart from this the car seems normal.

My question is, is this a common problem, or an easy fix? Where should i start looking first, or is it necessary to take it to a volvo dealer for a diagnostics test?

Any help hugely appreciated,

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,
You need to get someone to hook up an OBD-II code reader...the port for it is located under your arm rest...just lift the lid and you'll see a cover for the OBD port...pull that piece of plastic up and off. Without the codes it would be hard to know what is exactly going on but it does sound very much like a cam gear speed sensor.

Thanks for the reply.

I dont have access to a OBD-II code reader so i suppose i will have to take the car to a volvo garage.

Thanks, i will let you know what they say.

Most U.S. auto parts stores will read the codes for free. I'm wondering if it isn't the same in the U.K.? Over here at least we try to avoid the Volvo dealerships and leave it as a last resort.

Agreed....and for a '98 model Volvo, just about any reader will work. Make sure you get one that can/will reset the codes. Read them all off and post the "P-codes" here and we'll help from there. eBay U.K. has some good buys on these if you're willing to wait.
