Hi every one, I am trying to positively identify if my AUTRALIAN DELIVERED 1994 850 sedan is 10 valve or 20 valve.
I can see no identifying numbers on the motor or I.D plates.
The owners manual in the glove box lists 5 motors it could be and naturally these include both 10 and 20 valve motors which is unhelpful
I have read a bit on this forum that Australian 850s (apart from the rare T and T5 ) were delivered as 10 valve.
On the spark plug cover is written DOHC,
Other than that Im stumped, where is the identifying number located on the motor? ( if at all )

It’s stamped into the block on the right side of car near firewall. You usually have to clean it to read it. It’s holes punched into aluminum in shapes of numbers.

Hi , thank you for the help. I took a look in that area but I can not get a look at the rear of the block on the right hand side. I can only see the rear edge of the head, everything below that is obscured by the inability to get a good look down behind to the block, also the exhaust shroud shields the view of that area of the block. On the plus side I did find it on a sticker on the timing belt cover 85252S which I guess denotes 10 valve.thanks for your input tho. Would the motor have to be out to see the stamped area of the rear of the block or are you saying I can see it by standing against the fender and looking in ?

It's not an 8, it's a B. The motor code should be B5252S (Gasoline 5 Cylinder 2.5 Liter 2 Valves per cylinder. Forgot what S is)

S is naturally aspirated. T is for turbo
S stands for Sadd which is Swedish for normal air, loosely translated

The engine codes consist of a series of letters and digits:
1st: Fuel type (B/D/GB) B = Bensin (Petrol), D = Diesel, GB[47][nb 3] = Gas & Bensin
2nd: Number of cylinders (4/5/6)
3rd & 4th: Approximate displacement in deciliters, may be rounded up or down. (23 ~= 2.3 L)
5th: Valves per cylinder (2/4)
6th: Induction method (S/T/F/G/GS/FS/FT/SG) S = sadd (naturally aspirated), T = turbocharged, F = fuel injection with catalytic converter, G[48] = leaded fuel compatible, GS[49] = leaded fuel compatible, naturally aspirated, FS = fuel injected standard (naturally aspirated) with catalytic converter, FT = fuel injected, turbocharged with catalytic converter, SG[50] = standard (naturally aspirated) compatible with alternative fuels (LPG / CNG)
7th: Engine generation or engine variant (2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/10/11)
Engine codes are not necessarily unique to a specific engine as power levels can vary depending on market, manufacturer and model.
