Cigar Lighter Relay Location, 1998 v70

Post by MrAl »

Hello there,

I found some wiring diagrams for the Volvo. They are not very good though. They make you go through pages of stuff to find everything. They also give NO wire AWG gauges. My Hyundai wiring guide gave all the wire AWG gauges for that car and it was a cheap car. You would think Volvo would publish something better for a car that probably cost 5 times as much when new.

So anyway, i need to find this relay. It is the one in the diagram marked with the big blue arrow and marked "2/30".
It turns the two cigar lighter sockets off, both the front and the rear. The front and rear sockets are marked.
Any way to find this?

This could save me a lot of work if i can find this relay. I believe that by shorting out the two relay contacts i can make the cigar lighter sockets stay on all the time rather than shut off. That would help a lot.

Thanks for any information on this.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

That’s a main bus relay that powers many things. Don’t mess with it.

If you want the socket always powered, cut the wire to it and wire it direct to the battery with a 10-15 amp fuse

You run the risk of back feeding stuff of it isn’t wired directly and isolated.

Hi,

I was afraid of that. What a shame it would have made things much easier.

On the flip side, installing my own wire means i will know exactly what it is doing there and what gauge it is and everything else.
I dont see ANY wire gauge sizes on any wiring diagrams for this car and that makes it harder too.

Oh actually i needed the cigar socket wire for something else so i dont even need to cut the wire just install a new wire like you say and maybe use only the ground wire from the socket. Or maybe just go with a dual wire like i did in my old Hyundai. At least that way i wont have to depend on any crummy wiring diagrams.

Thanks for the info as usual.

Does your car have a 2nd cigarette lighter in the rear ashtray in the center console?

Hi,

Yes, is that important?

14 AWG would be fine for 10 amp, 3% drop. That’s AWG gauge, not SAE.

12 AWG for 15 amp but that’s too high for charging.

I would 15 Amp fuse for that application.

Hi Al, it is only important if you want to use a 2nd charging outlet you were mentioning you needed somewhere to run power to. That way if you used the rear one, you could use the front on for normal use. The wiring harness is simple under the center console and the rear connections are just a spur from the front, so easy enough to cut into and modify.

If only Volvo had included an extra
connector for adding "Accessories"...

Hi Neil,

Yes i was looking at that, but what it comes down to is i dont really need the cigar socket itself, just the wiring from the battery to inside the car. So i might just go with a heavy duty two pole terminal strip and wire from the battery to that inside the car, then i will have power for just about anything including charging the battery. The nice thing is i probably really only need #16 AWG wire that should handle my needs, the solar panel will put out just 1.1 amp max even with direct overhead sunlight with no clouds.
