It appears one of the two female receptacles that the bulb plugs into is broken. See image. I am going to try source a new "plug" locally tomorrow. Hopefully it is just from age.

Closing the story on this issue now. I bought a generic receptacle with pig tails from the local parts store, then took off front bumper cover to remove headlight assembly so wiring could be done indoors with sufficient space. After reassembly bulb lights, so I will button up the bumper cover tomorrow after a little cleaning.

When cutting and stripping original wires on headlight assembly I noted the copper wires were dark with corrosion even under the insulation. I am hoping this is normal and expected considering they are now 17 years old.

dialectric grease helps stop this , moisture gets past the rubber seal on the plug, green gremlins start growing, increasing resistance becomes heat and plastic parts melt.

I seem to recall having some issues with the receptacle as well. Can't quite remember that I replaced it with (amazon, ebay) or maybe I just snipped one off from the junkyard. Also recall something about getting ceramic receptacles. Sorry, my memory is failing me at the moment.
