Coolant bottle hoses 1999 S70

Post by 454cid »

I have a coolant leak, and I believe it's the bottle or lower hose. Before I start ordering parts, I'm wondering if that lower hose could be replaced by bulk hose. Is the diameter the same on both ends? Is it 3/4"/19mm or something in between common sizes? I think 1" is also available in bulk.

Would epoxy fix a crack in the factory Volvo bottle?

The system is only pressured up to the max 15 psi which is the cap valve limit. So typically the pressure is lower in the coolant system.

Gluing may work, but as it is warm water and chemicals in there I'm not sure how well that will work. Maybe use a soldering iron and melt the plastic on the outside of the crack in the bottle, then scuff the surface, clean with rubbing alcohol and then try gluing it over the top. I think the pipe takes a sharp 90 degree out the bottom of the bottle. Maybe you can replicate with one of those internal springs to prevent hoses collapsing on bends?

I've been thinking about how to handle this for a couple of days now. I took a look at the pictures online of the correct hose, since you mentioned the bend. It's not quite 90, by the pictures, and MAYBE a piece of bulk hose would be okay there, but I noticed it looks like each end is a different diameter. I'll just buy a molded hose, I guess. Probably get a new bottle, too.

It sucks, but then I don't think the designers ever thought many of these cars would still be around 25-30 years later!
