Restoration of a 2000 V40 T4, guidance needed!

Post by eddyRR »

Hi all!

I have a 2000 V40 T4 at home that was mainly used by me till I bought another car. Never wanted to sell it since it was my first car and holds a special place. Now I wanted to commit into a full restoration project, no limits, bit by bit so it isn't an economic pain in the short run...

A bit of context about the car.

- B4194T2 engine, 200hp close to have 260.000km. Manual M56 transmission.
- Strict oil maintenance since I bought it, so oil has been up to date always. Same with filters.
- Stock suspension, never been changed. This is something I want to upgrade, so a bit of advice of what to buy for the better would be really appreacited.

Now, some bits to fix I've got in the radar:
- I've got to change all the seals in doors, windows and trunk. They are pretty worn and for example, in the trunk, the water goes inside even with the door closed.
- Red light sensor located front-right in the dash, is it the temp sensor? - It is broken, no light whatsoever.
- Whenever you are driving the car, you can feel massive heat in your feet. I suspect the whole AC system might require fixing/replacing.
- Rough idle, after you drive for a bit and you stop the car would vary from 1200 rpm down to 900 rpm and so on so forth.
- Tappets may require to be adjusted or replaced, a "clack clack clack clack clack clack" is heard even after the car has got its ideal temperature.
- Steering "clonk" sound, probably I need to replace the steering column or the crank shaft. I would need to check this with my mechanic.
- Not enough push when turbo kicks in as it used to have. It may be the turbo about to break or some pipes that are broken. May check with my mechanic too.

My plan is to start checking the turbo, and if it's broken already then tune the whole engine up and increase its power with a tune and a new turbo.

Any tips about this engine/model are really welcome!

I will update this thread with all the things I do to the car.

Also, here it goes a photo of the car :)

Hi Eddy, thanks for joining. You've got a rare color on that V40, very pretty. I understand completely why you want to do this restoration. My mom had a 2000 V40, silver, and I liked it.

I'd start at Stage 0. Then work on the rest. You want to divide this project into manageable chunks.

Here's my musings on the Panama paint. That article is incorrect on the Volvos that had a pale yellow paint option... in addition to those I listed, there was a 240 color that is similar. I need to fix that.

Love that article!

Is it true that Evo III components are compatible with this gen V40? Don't really know which parts are worth going aftermarket, but would love to improve handling and stickness to the road with better suspension.

That's a good question. I don't know. The Evo's turbo (16G) would go on it, but then just about any turbo will go on any car with enough work. But suspension things I can't speak to.

This mentions brakes and some bushings.
