2012 XC60 High Temp warning

Post by danvan54 »

My XC60 has been a great ride for several years, but last weekend I got a High Temp alert on the dash. It went from warning to alert to pull over and stop. I checked the coolant level in the overflow tank and it was maybe 16 ounces low. I topped it off and next time I was driving the alert came back. Coolant level was down a little again and I looked for a leak- none found around thermostat, radiator or water pump.
The only wet spot I found was at the overflow tank and I thought it was from spilling a little when adding coolant. I was able to drive to the auto parts store and use their OBD2 scanner to check for probable causes. There are no DTC codes at all. Engine temp on a warm engine was at 242F.
Before I just start throwing parts at it ($$$) I would like to pinpoint the cause and fix it right the first time. Anyone have suggestions?

Update- the XC60 is a 2012 with the 3.2 inline 6 and it has 170,000 miles on it.

Here is the update for the high temp warning on my XC60. I have now replaced the thermostat, serpentine belt, water pump, idler pulley and tensioner. The old tensioner froze up and the pulley on it was disintegrated- therefore the serpentine was not able to drive the water pump.
The thermostat was broken inside, when I took it off the spring popped out the the retainer was stuck inside.
This job was not all that complicated- just hard to access everything! Thanks to those who posted a link to the YouTube video that showed the entire process.
