no pickup, weak acceleration 1998 V70
My wife's 1998 V70 AWD doesn't accelerate with any zip. The car drives OK and there are no codes set on the OBD-II system. I haven't driven this car at all so I am not sure what the acceleration should be like. It just doesn't feel like it should be this weak. I hold my breath merging into expressway traffic. If the turbo was not working correctly shouldn't there be some error code?

I am beginning to think that the turbocharger is not operating. There is not boast at all. Is there some way to check the turbo for basic operation? If the turbo was not working wouldn't the OBD-II set one or more error codes? There are no error codes set on this car. 1998 V70 AWD, 62K miles. Pretty low mileage for a turbo failure, in my opinon.
Thanks Tsquared,
Unfortunately for me, the wastegate linkage is solidly connected. My problem is something else I'm afraid. I still don't know if the turbo is even spinning. The lack of error codes is throwing me off. I hate going to the dealer but I don't know anyone else that can work on this problem.

The turbos on 850s/70s are pretty bulletproof. It's a strange problem you have. Please let us know what the dealer says.

I just returned from the Volvo dealer. They charged me $95/hr to perform a diagnostic check of my problem. The bottom line is the Turbo probably has no output and they quoted $1600 to replace. However they cannot be sure that it the Turbo is bad until they take it apart when they replace it. I asked about the turbo's control circuits but I didn't get a satisfactory response from the service rep. I wasn't allowed to talk to the tech that looked at my car. Only 64K miles on this car! However, the dealer did wash my car. Why do I feel like I got hosed?
Is replacing the turbo a DIY project? Any special tools? I plan on selling the car after it's repaired, can a used turbo be satisfactory?
