Charging Failure on 2011 XC70 T6

Post by pinegrovedave »

Hey all,

Was wondering if anyone could offer any suggestions or insight as to what I'm seeing here...

Back on the 5th of this month, my wife was driving and all the electronics went "wonky" on her. Lost power steering...trans acting weird. She managed to park it and while waiting for a tow, the car completely went dead.

Anyway, once we got the car home, I took a reading off the DieHard battery and read about 8.4 VDC. I replaced it with a new Everstart Platinum AGM and everything seemed fine for a couple weeks until 2-3 days ago.

Now I'm getting an intermittent "Charging Failure-Service Urgent" message periodically that will go away after a few minutes, but then come back on the next day or so.

With the vehicle off, the battery is still reading a good 12.45 VDC and roughly the same when running as well.

I tried disconnecting the BMS for 30 seconds while running, and when I tried the Ignition Mode II/Parking Lights/Rear Fog 6x/Hazard 3x I never saw the battery indicator flash on the dash...

Any info would be appreciated. TIA

Dave,

There are different failure modes. We need more information.

1. Is the Alternator spinning?

If not then read this https://www.aulro.com/afvb/freelander-2 ... owner.html

2. Is the small control wire broken?

read this to find out more https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic32004 ... tery+light

3. If it isn't #1 or #2 then you may need to rebuild or get a rebuilt Alternator

Take a look here https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic39641.html

Let us know how many miles are on your vehicle and if the overdrive pulley for the alternator has been replaced

Good luck

Paul

Hi Paul,

Weird...I didn't get notification that you replied...Anyway, yeah the alternator was spinning and the voltage was bouncing between 11 and 14.5 VDC so I went ahead and bought an AC Delco remanufactured alternator. Put it in today...and as luck would have it, the control wire connector clip snapped off. I'm not getting any voltage and I suspect the harness isn't making the connection at the alternator. Ugh.
