Boot, CV joint, or axle?

I discovered this whilst under the car this weekend. Right-side CV boot is spraying grease.

Pretty clearly split at the bellows.

I've heard no noises, no problems. 150,000 miles, '04 XC70.

I'm reading on MVS about GKN boots and axles. I read something about stretching the new boot over the joint, is that possible? I thought you had to take it apart and remove the joint to replace a factory boot.
If it's possible, is that the frugal and smart thing to do and plan on complete axles down the road?

A factory original GKN axle is worth preserving, particularly if it shows no signs of failure. Get yourself a new GKN boot and grease and replace it. New GKN axles are around $400 a side when I replaced mine 3 years ago. Your split boot looks like its still at the stage of spewing grease out but not split open enough where it would allow dirt and road slop in.

The universal stretch boots won't work for you because the inner cup outer diameter area is not round and they're not a good choice anyway. As Blacklab467 mentioned get a GKN boot kit and replace. It's a messy job but worth it to save a good axle. Would be best to clean, re-grease and replace both the inner and outer boots while the axle is out.

One thing if you do this is the staked areas of the inner cup need to be ground down or peened down so you can pull out the inner tri-pod.

Nice to have a vice to hold the axle while doing the boot replacement.

OK, this is smart information you guys.
FCP has the boot kits?

So, axle out
CV joints removed from axle
Slide new boots onto shaft
Grease
Reassemble CV joints onto the shaft
Clamp boots
Reinstall axle?

I haven't done CV joints in a long time....my '78 Scirocco??

Mean while, wrap a plastic bag around the boot and tape it good.
This will reduce the mess and keep out dirt and water.

I found one of those 1A Auto videos on the RF axle......



He doesn't mark his camber alignment before pulling the upright off the strut. I've seen recently on MVS how you might undo the top strut nuts so the entire tower moves and you can wrangle the axle out of the hub. I like that better, I just aligned this thing.

Y'know, I have to say that ^^^ is a chaotic thread, with contradicting information, backtracking, tasks in the wrong order, changing terminology, and then an argument right in the middle??

I would suggest that if you discover an error in what you have said, or later find a simpler way to do something, go back to the original post and EDIT it so it's clear and correct. Get rid of all the wrong stuff that just is confusing.

This smallish woman at 1AAUTO does not have huge strength, she does this job the simplest way with the right tools, she does not have blocks of wood or wedges, and pip pip pop, it's all back together. It is a P2 Volvo of the correct years, with good lighting and smart, safe work methods.
