Head compatibility

Post by Sveedy »

So I stumbled upon a '98 V70 GLT that is missing its head due to overheating. Head was removed years ago and is now MIA..
My questions are:
Do the low pressure turbos and the high pressure turbos use the same head ? That is do they both have sodium filled exhaust valves.
And if I'm replacing the head, can I put on a high pressure turbo ? A tune goes without saying.

IIRC on 850s only turbos had sodium valves... I don't know if it changed for the 70s.

Yes: 15g turbo, white injectors and tune. Did that on mine and been running that way for 100k miles and 11 years now. Bottom end is getting tired, though.

Well for $125 delivered to my door I couldn't say no. Door tag says 8/98, but titled as '99. So I don't know if that matters if I'm replacing the head and intake anyway.
Pictures coming as soon as I can work out the current feud between my phone and laptop.

A 99 is a pretty different car and much less desirable IMO. But for $125 delivered ... !!!

Looking forward to updates regardless :)

That was my thought exactly. But I called the local salvage yard before I bought it. They'll come pick it up and give me $225, so this is probably the last time I'll be able to sell it at a profit.
Is there anything different with the block that would prevent me from putting a different head, intake etc on it, along with a different tune ?

Also see the “ bastards thread” with focus on the 98 > 99 changes

Note the ETM angst has evolved to a $150 eBay search for the latest used contactless ETM body from Volvo, not the $1000 poke on the eye of before. Coincidentally about the price of cap , rotor, and plug wires you don’t have to buy every 100k

ETM issues are covered in the ETM room forum below

😀

I have three 99s so I have a backup ETMs for both turbo and NA
