What gauge wire for a 20A fuse?
What gauge wire for a 20A fuse?
I have to rewire the wires going to/ from the fuse box re: my radio. It's the 20A fuse that is accessible when you open the driver's door. It's a complicated issue, but I need to add an in-line 20A fuse. Do I need to consider the gauge wire I use to add a 20A fuse? I ordered a fuse holder with attached wire and it was 12g...very thick, not very pliable to route around things. What gauge wire would be appropriate for use with a 20A fuse? Don't ask about the 'issue'...This will correct it.

Electrical code here states 12 gauge for a 20 amp breaker, not sure how that translates to 12V dc in automotive land. Stranded wire would make bends easier. I would think if you're adding a fuse in-line, just splice it in somewhere convenient on the existing wire.

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

14 AWG or 12awg depending on the wire run.
Here is the chart , note two things
Length is total length, or 2x the piece of wire you cut to run to the load.
10% non critical circuit are resistive loads and lamps
Electronic stuff needs the 3% critical rating

It is best to always use stranded wire for all automotive applications. Solid wire will work harden with vibrations and may break. I have purchased automotive blade type fuse holders with stranded wire ends. Some even have water seal caps over the fuse.

Lug is 100% on point , thanks for catching that. One of the few times it is good to be stranded
