I don't think so, but it might depend on how the clamp is rotated. You just have to feel around the end of that pipe, and you should feel the clamp. I get to it from up top with a long 1/4" extension.

can you please explain what a sweep test is and how its performed?
Yes; it’s a test of the electronic throttle body module (ETM). It “sweeps” the butterfly valve inside the throttle body all the way open to all the way closed to see if it can move as it is suppposed to. Some of the “chugging” symptoms you are describing can be attributed to a bad throttle body.

To complete this test you would need access to laptop with VIDA software installed and the DICE connection unit that plugs into the cars OBD-II port. If you don’t have these, I would find someone who has one or find a Volvo specific garage that has VIDA and can perform this test. It doesn’t cost money within the VIDA suite to do the test, so ideally a shop would only charge you diagnostic time to find the results of this.

If your car has never had the ETM replaced, I’m frankly suprised you haven’t had issues sooner. For reference, my 99’ had it’s throttle body replaced in 2014 with a remanufactured unit from XEMODEX that doesn’t have the failures of the original unit.

I think I may be on to something !

The car finally threw a code P1238. I went to check the vacuum lines on the turbo. However like I said the main air duct seemed loose. The clamp is in place and the entire airduct is broken off after the clamp, hence i could jiggle it. so its litterally just sitting against the part that is clamped on.

im ordering a new one

thoughts? could a broken/disconnected air duct into the turbo be the cuprit?

Looks like the right part to me. The pice that is left clamped on could prove tough to get off - hard to get your hands in there.

If the leak is after the MAF sensor, that could totally be an issue. I've had a charge pipe coupler blow off under boost and the car would run like crap.

In your instance, if it's cracked, it could seal, until something caused a misalignment resulting in a huge leak of metered air. Then the bucking/surging might close the gap back up and the car will behave normally.

If you're needing to drive the car regularly, you could probably tape it up until the new part arrives.

Yes on that broken snorkel causing p1238, and that’s the right part number too, it comes with a new PTC orfice as well, I believe

If air is getting into that intake past the MAF that would definitely cause an issue!! Good find.

Still not a bad idea to see if you have an updated throttle body that does not have the issues of earlier units. I believe they will have a yellow or white sticker on the side of the IIRC. Could be seen from above easily with a mirror.

Here the update. Ordered and installed the new air intake (oem volvo). I also replaced the plugs with OEM plugs. I started the car. At first it started up and ran but if i took my foot off the pedal the rpms dropped so i kept them up to 1500 for a bit then it settled in and started idling fine. 30 seconds later it died. I started it again and this time it started "chugging" again. depressing the gas pedal kept it running but it chugged and acted like no power. also it smelled like it was running rich. then the ETS light came on. I turned the car off and checked for codes. P1238 was the only one.

Any idea on what it could be ?
