ok came out this morning and i still have an issue. Started the car and it fired right up.I had to keep the rpms at 1500 or more to keep the car running. it was smooth at 1500+. and purring along. however if i let off off the gas, the engine would shudder, rpms bottomed out and stalled.when i restarted it was rough idle and shuddering and smelled like it was running rich.
turned it off, I got my code reader. cleared the codes and restarted the engine. here is what happened:
At first the engine ran slightly rough again keeping it at 2000 rpm to avoid a stall. The gas pedal seemed sluggish i push it and the engine revs up but sluggishly. but then it started to smooth out and next I could actually feel it. All the sudden the RPMs jumped up to 2500+ and the engine reacted quickly to the gas pedal as if nothing wrong.
during this it threw a P1238 once again

Time for a smoke test. That's how I finally tracked down my cracked intercooler.

Well all you're doing is sealing up the system and putting some smoke under pressure into it to see if/where the smoke comes out.
So maybe a rubber glove just before the MAF, and then inject the smoke either through one of the vacuum ports on the vacuum tree, or ( even better ) pull the vacuum line from the brake booster and inject smoke there. It won't take much pressure at all for the smoke to come out of a leak. I tried making one, and it didn't work very well, so I went to a shop and had them do it. You could buy a machine yourself ( $150 ?) for less than what a shop will probably charge you these days.

I picked up one of EVAP, smoke testers off Amazon a few years back. They're $60-100. You need to have an pressurized air source, as the "machine" just makes the smoke.
Has come in handy several times, but we own 8 cars, so lost more places to use it.

great - i have a couple compressors and a foot pump and hand pump..so plenty of pressure sources (just hand to set the compressor to a very low setting. I do that when i pressure bleed my brakes.
i will look at amazon and see whats up. I agree my local indy would likely charge me a diag fee which these days runs anywhere from 50 to 85 depending upon what they do, so I might as well add a tool to the collection

OK guys - heres the status. I bought a smoke machine (really awesome) and pushed smoke through the intake. I found a leak in a connection from the turbo to the ETM. and fixed it. Otherwise no leaks. I started the car. no more chugging. so that problem seems to be fixed. The car ran much better over all
HOWEVER, I still have an Idle problem. When I start the car i have to give it gas to keep it going. if i let off the gas it stalls
I see 2 symptoms:
1) the rpms go up and down even with the accelerator steady. for example I push the accelerator and get the rpms to 1900/2000. keeping my foot still the rpms drop to 1600 and go back to 1900 drop to 1600 etc.
2) once the car was warmed up the idle stopped hunting and I could take my foot off the gas and the car idled however it was idling at 850 and occasionally would stall. upon restart it would idle at 850 but it seemed a little (tiny bit) rough like it was on the verge of stalling
the ide seems low
no codes
thoughts?
