Broken rear windshield

Post by wrybread »

I somehow managed to smash the rear dash window of my 1998 S70 GLT yesterday. Was a great way to start the day.

Any recommendations on where to get a replacement? Is this a job for Pick n Pull?

Mine had tinting and I think heating, but I don't really need either. Don't mind if they're there though, just miss having a rear windshield. Although I will say the visibility out the back of the car is better than ever currently.

And how to install a rear windshield? I'm thinking maybe bring the window to a window installer? Or is it easy enough to DIY?

Thanks for any help.

Have you tried calling a windshield shop or 2 for cost of a replacement including install?

It is possible to remove front and rear windshields but it is tricky and you need some specialized equipment like a cheese-wire to cut through the windshield glue to remove it. There is also a reasonable chance of cracking it. Install also requires careful preparation of the surfaces and prep products and sealing compound. Check local junkyards if they pull glass at all as that may be worth paying for.

Rear windshields are broken less often so may be hard to find new. However, the reverse may be true is there may be NOS parts kicking around due to lack of demand. Therefore you may get a deal on one.

Up here we are kings of broken windshields as they use small gravel on the roads in winter. An aftermarket (now mostly Chinese) glass front windshield for a P80 is around $300 CDN installed (around $230 US approx).

Good Luck!

That is my experience - my drivers side door glass cost way more than a windshield, but I think it’s worth having the glass shop replace it.
