Today I spent time corresponding with Parts Avatar in Canada confirming they are wrong on the brakes for our 06 XC70 and copied them on information Royal Oak Volvo parts dept. sent to me confirming our car was fitted with 286mm rotors and caliper brackets from new and not the 305mm brackets they insisted it should have fitted.
Then this afternoon the 02 V70XC returned for a check over and oil and filter change. Hard to believe the car has already covered 10,000km since the owner had it handed back to him at the end of last year. Only issues are a leaking power steering header tank pipe (again, we replaced the leaky tank last year). The pipe is a little loose and probably will need replaced at some point as it is getting swollen. Adding a bunch of power steering oil (none on dipstick!) and it stopped groaning. Strange.........
We also reviewed the damage from the deer hit on the RHF corner. There is a bit of damage. The metal slam panel is bent at the inner edge of the RH headlight. It is not terrible and I think we can straighten that. The front bumper is really bad so we need a skin for that. We may also need the RHF bumper retainer as it is damaged, and possibly a crash bar. All-in-all not too bad and easily fixable.
Then an oil and filter change. Overdue by 2000km but it wasn't terrible. We will rein that change frequency in to 8000km in future now the car is closing in shortly on 250,000 miles (400kkm). The engine is still running sweetly.
I gave the front lower control arms a check as they were needing changed 6-8 months ago and the parts are still on my workbench looking for a home, alone with rear trailing arm bushes and rear shock. Hopefully we can make a start on that list this weekend. Still need to build the rear trailing arm bush tool. $1000 CDN for a 4 part tool is not happening! There was a simple one shown on MVS I need to try to track down again.
Tomorrow is 06 V50 T5 AWD low compression day........

The first crisis on the subframe bushings replacement -
The impact gun has rounded the points of the LF 18mm bolt head. They are on there! I used a 4’ pipe on a breaker bar for the rear ones. Impact gun didn’t budge them.

I got it - thank the orbiting planets!
I tried a vice grip on there as tight as it would go, with the pipe on the handle - no go, started to turn and chew the points even worse.
My wife got a ride doing errands - I asked her to get an 18mm 1/2” impact socket. Mine are 17 and 21, so I was using a normal 3/8 drive socket with a reducer - I assumed that would shear off first.
No loose sockets, so she got a small set on sale. I pounded the 18 onto the bolt head. Didn’t turn but didn’t strip it. Then I used the 4’ pipe very carefully and it turned! Whew!
RF came off with the impact.

I managed to replace the sway bar. I have now twice reused the subframe bolts and one of them felt like it had less resistance when I was torquing it down. I opted not to do 130 degrees not that I had the power do it either way.
I have also vacuumed up the AC system to prepare for AC radiator replacement.

I’ll say! Getting it out was a pain! I had to hang the back of the subframe way down and kind of man handle it out the back.
