Bill,
Thank you very much for the sources of information. My Bently Service manual along with some other people led me to believe that the the crank and puley had a separate "key" that could have fallen out. Now I know that it is actually a piece that is not. Also, I like some of the ideas suggested for holding the pulley and being able to turn the attaching bolt.
Thanks again, Mark
240 B230 crank pulley
Bill,
Got the crank pulley back on correctly. I hated to spend the money on the pulley tool so I used a piece of scrap 1/4" steel stock and cut two fork like projections in it that fit into 2 holes on the pulley. I then held this piece of metal with an 18" pipe wrench. Could loosen and tighten the crank bolt with no trouble at all and the pulley never moved.

fcpgroton has them for $44, I payed a volvo mechanic $20 and got one.
I've been reading these posts re: Crank pulley/crankshaft keyway & apparently there seems to be enormous confusion about this subject. What this guy is talking about is: There is a keyway machined on both the crank pulley as well as the end of the crankshaft. The purpose of these keyways is to prevent the pulley from sliding around the crankshaft end. There is a KEY that fits these 2 keyways. It's a very odd key & for the life of me, I CANNOT FIND A REPLACEMENT. There is NO Volvo dealer that has a pic of it in their parts books. Be advised, this has NOTHING to do with ANY of the pulleys, gears, belts, etc. that comprise the timing system of these models. It has ONLY to do with securing the crank pulley to the crankshaft. If ANYONE knows where I can buy this key, please post the data. Thanks. Ric

The B230 crankshaft keyway fits the crankshaft timing sprocket. The timing sprocket has a front tab that aligns with the rear of the crankshaft pulley.
