e brake kind of working // 87 240DL

Post by tubaman9 »

mileage : 700,000km+ / 450,000+ ( it stopped working 3 years ago, I heard its a common problem but it doesnt bother me )

Anyways, my 240's e brake kind of works, I know that it isnt adjusted right and I need to do my rear disk brake pads anyways. I was wondering what the procedure would be for tightening the e brake drum?

Would I have to remove the rotor to access the drum?

Thank you for the help

James

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Another low mileage Volvo!!!

The rear brakes on the 240, and other models, incorporate the e (parking) brake. The centre of the rotor is the drum for the parking brake shoes.

To adjust the parking brake without checking for wear on the shoes would be a waste of time.

To access the brake shoes remove the centre console rear ashtray. Working through the hole loosen the parking brake cable adjusting nut until the cables are slack.
Raise and support the rear end and remove the wheels.
Remove the brake pads and calipers, without disconnecting the hydraulic line, and support the caliper out of the way.
Remove the rotor (disc).
You now have access to the parking brake shoes. If they need replacing remove the return springs and the adjuster.
If the drum is more than 0.008ins (0.2mm) out of round it must be replaced.
Apply a thin coat of heat-resistant grease to the shoe sliding surfaces and the adjuster.
Replace the drum and adjust the brakes.
Align the hole in the drum with the adjuster.
Tighten the adjuster until the drum can just be rotated by hand then back off the adjuster until the drum just rotates freely.
Install the rear wheels.
Adjust the cable until the parking brake is fully applied when the lever is pulled up 2 or 3 notches.
Replace the ashtray and lower the vehicle.
