The issue is programming.

PS: go to any local used car dealers, they usually know a local guy that can cut and program keys for Toyota, Honda etc. Euro cars are another issue for these Indy key maker...
The volvo parts guy said I could remove the transducer from the fob, leave it inside the ignition surround shell.

Can you share the names of the shops? PM if necessary..

I recommend the second one - neither provides a guarantee for the cutting so bring your car and verify the key works. I haven't had a key fail from either location.

Can you explain this a little more? Is there a Volvo part number for service 2.0? I need to get updated transmission software for my 2004 XC70 and it was ~$400 last time I got the same transmission update on a 2001 V70.

Think you're getting screwed... the dealer is required to provide software updates free of charge with any other scheduled service at the dealership per their Service 2.0 commitment. I only received mine when I brought my car in for a corporate level "recall" repair (seat heater fire.. long story) but I'm thinking you can book an oil change and receive it. At least on all critical modules like TCM, ECM, etc. My TCM and leak detection pump software were updated. More detail : https://www.volvocars.com/sg/l/service-2-0/

Hey gurus,

If you only have a valet key, can you harvest the transponder out of it and "create" a full functioning fob ? Like- can they also cut it to be a fully functional key without the valet restrictions, and if I were to create the fob, I imagine I would have to find a "donor" fob.

The groove that goes along the length of the key blade would need to be cut from a V shaped groove for the valet key to a square shaped groove for the regular key. A Dremel tool with a cutting disk may be able to widen the narrow V groove into a flat bottom groove.

This ebay item looks like it has a regular cut groove instead of the smaller Valet key groove:

yeh, the volvo dealership on Rt.1 Norwood MA quoted me $90 to cut a new blade. No remote. 7 yrs ago.

I also came across a chinese service that cuts new blade from a photo, it was stupid cheap, like $8, I haven't been able to find it again.

Re: Valet vs Full Service keys, it is more than that, search YouTube so you can see but:
- Square vs "V" grooves
- Key profile, the way it is cut, is different too.
