Trying to help out a friend with his V70. He is having some issues with the low oil pressure light coming on over the past few days.

The car runs normally oil level is not low and the light , when it comes on occurs when he is 95% of the way to work. He is not hearing any noises from the engine and when it restarts the light is not on.

He read online that it could be the sending unit so he bought one and I put it in and there was no light for a few days but then it returned.

So he mentions that he did an oil change 2 weeks ago and o'rielly auto asked him if he was using synthetic oil(which he is) because there is a different filter for that. News to me but of course the special filter was out of stock anyway so he bought the regular element.

Ok so after the light returned I suggested he pull the filter , maybe something is wrong with it , its collapsing etc. But it looks ok , however there is a lot of black slop in the housing for only 2 weeks time, the oil wasn't bad when it was drained out he said.

Cleans out the slop puts another orielly non synthetic filter in, 2 days later the light is back.

Here is where it gets annoying , somehow he talks me into trading volvos with him and I give him my car and take his. I drive a day its fine and the light then returns .

I pull the filter and there is some sludge already but not terrible however I notice that inside the housing part of the bypass valve at the bottom is broken off ! i can see into it where the piece is missing and the broken piece is not in there so maybe it happened a while ago and was tossed.

2 questions initially ,
do these valves malfunction and require replacement
and
2 if part of it is missing will sludge go around the filter and plug the sensor , which is nearby?

Any help would be appreciated

1. Restore the item which is 100% broken.
2. Remove old pressure sensor and inspect / clean it.
3. Can try Valvoline Restore and Protect synthetic oil next oil change.
4. No specific oil filter to the best of my knowledge. Quality is more important here.
5. Verify proper oil type for the engine.
6. Can screw in manual oil pressure gaige and see the pressure upon idling and hot engine(lowest pressure condition).
7. If nothing to loose and no intrest to do anything significant- move to more viscous oil type 10w-40 probably.

There is no 'alternate' filters. That is nonsense. There are good filters and junk ones. The cap/cover has a valve in it to hold oil pressure in it which maintains oil pressure to the head. As has been recommended, you need to replace the filter cover with a new (ideally OE) one or one from a junkyard which is likely OE.

Well I changed the filter housing with an OEM unit that wasn't broken at the bottom and took it for a ride and I still get the warning light but its behaving strangely. flickered on and off then stayed off then came on steady a few times. I'm driving around my block so I don't get too far away.
I jacked it up and the sending unit wire is clipped on to the sending unit but it kind of flops around on it , its also pulled kind of tight , I'm wondering if its a bad connection which might explain the sporadic nature of the light.
What a miserable location to access from below. while under there antifreeze is dripping in my face from somewhere near the electro throttle body area.

I took the air intake hoses out and can access the sensor location from above that way I think I may put a gauge in place of the idiot light. Before I do though , why is coolant on the throttle body? I see a small hose leaving near the large outlet near the power steering hose it goes under the plenum but I can't tell where it goes . I suppose I can pull the plenum out if I need to to fix the leak while I'm here.
I looked at a few diagrams but i don't see the small hose on any of them it goes to the outlet numbered #2

My plan is to mount an autometer manual pressure gauge to the location of the OEM idiot light sender. Autozone has a kit of metric fittings to adapt the aftermarket gauge to the metric port for $13 which is a great price. I like braided stainless lines normally but I think it would be too hard to route(plus super expensive ) so I will use a copper line.

I had a bosch oil gauge kit that used nylon line, came with adapters in one package. Cheap.

Coolant under intake manifold...my guess your friend earned an honor to do pcv system job. If I remember correctly there is a coolant hose that is the part of the pipe assembly. Connects to intake manifold or close to thermostat..sorry I am trying not to remember or look back at pictures of that system after ptsd of doing it twice(thank you ipd for poor quality hoses)

I had a problem with the oil pressure light turning on and sludge in the filter on my 2007 Ti Grey S60 2.5T and it turned out to be an improperly installed oil pan o-ring that was bleeding off some of the oil pressure and slowing the oil flow through the engine. The light would turn on when the engine was super cold in the middle of Detroit winter around 0 F. See this post:

I’d bet its oil pickup orings that’ve hardened and is sucking air. Had to replace them on my 02 S60 2.4t.

Check the dipstick for air bubbles, tell tale sign.

You should hook up a oil pressure sensor with gauge. The dash light comes on about 5-8 psi. If it really is that low at speed there is major problem. Sensor/gauge could help you tell if its the wiring or a real problem.
