04 v70 steering line Topic is solved

new rack is bolted in now, working only at night to avoid the heat.
pressure and return lines are in.
Still need to connect the fluid lines to the rack and secure along the rack the best I can.

Trying to install the lower ujoint shaft on the rack but the shaft fell inside the footwell. duh
Need to get in the footwell and put the shaft on the rack but the car doors can't open when its on the lift, so I might have to climb through the window.

I might get it mostly done tonight.

Fat chance , after fighting with the rack connections I realized the pressure hose is the wrong design.
Pulled the pressure line out and compared old and new at the rack connection, very different bends.
This was a cheapo amazon $57 part I bought last November..., just placed an order from FCP.
Add another week.

New line arrtived, took hours but its in.
I removed the sway bar for better access.
Still need to connect the steering coupler but the major obstacle is done.

Those pressure lines at the rack are awful for access. When I did my 1999 I attached them and installed the rack with lines attached!

My 02 S60 required a crowsfoot socket…tight space!

did you not drop the sub frame ?,
I used a regular wrench on the pipe fittings, sub frame was dropped at least 8 inches.

The thought occured to me to thread the line then install the rack, at one point I pulled the rack and the pressure line out again and test fitted it on the bench, I feared it had gotten cross threaded but it was good, I made note of how the line has to be perfectly lined up along the rack, then I removed the threaded studs from the rack, it slid in place fast, like sh*t off a shovel.
Without the studs I could slide the rack around until the union lined up and it threaded in so much easier.
Studs went back in easy using the nuts to draw them back into place.

No, on my 02 S60 FWD could just barely make it work with a crowsfoot — if I recall right I needed to use a 1/4” socket extension to be thin enough (with adapter on the crowsfoot). It was a super tight fit and partial rotation of the nut each time but could make it work. Not a fun job!!
