Hey guys,
Dealing with a couple of annoying issues on my '06 S80 D5 (P3) and could use some advice.
First one is a persistent P0427 code (Cat temp sensor low input). Parts catalogs seem to be a complete mess when it comes to these exhaust sensors. Can anyone tell me exactly which sensor triggers this specific code and where it is located? I just want to make sure I buy and replace the correct part.
The second problem is driving me crazy. The car pulls great when cold, but if I do a highway run, stop at a rest area and restart it while it's still hot, it has absolutely no power. Feels exactly like limp mode—it revs freely but barely accelerates. Usually, there are zero codes for this power loss, but rarely, it throws a P0299 (Low boost) code. I strongly suspect the hot power loss and the occasional underboost code are connected.
I'm starting to suspect the fuel rail pressure sensor based on some digging, thinking maybe the crippled fueling is preventing the turbo from spooling.
(FYI: I recently had the entire swirl flap assembly replaced, so that should be perfectly fine now).
One quick side question while I'm here: the engine consumes a little bit of oil. Would you guys dare to switch from the standard 0W-30 to a slightly thicker 0W-40 or 5W-40 (a DPF-friendly C3 rated oil, of course) to help reduce consumption, or should I strictly stick to the factory spec?
Has anyone dealt with this exact combo before? Any input is appreciated!

P0427 This sensor monitors the temperature of the exhaust gas before the catalytic converter.
First check for:
1. Damaged, loose, or corroded wiring and connectors in the sensor circuit
2. Exhaust leaks near the sensor which alter the temperature readings.
The second problem sounds like heat soak and/or leaking Intercooler Pipes.
When you shut off the engine at the rest stop the heat in the engine starts dumping into the engine compartment and soaks everything with heat. Hot air is less dense, so the ECU lowers boost to stop engine damage.
Leaking Intercooler Pipes: Rubber or plastic tubes get soft when hot and expand and can start leaking. Pressurized air escape before it reaches the engine (Low Boost). Check and make sure everything is tight.

Sorry for the delayed reply, I've been completely swamped lately!
Regarding the heat soak and leaking intercooler pipes for the P0299 code: that makes perfect sense. I actually tightened all the hose clamps a while ago and haven't had the issue since, so you were spot on with that!
As for the P0427 code: I can't check the entire wiring harness, but where it is visible, the wires are not corroded or chafed. The connectors seem perfectly fine, and there are no exhaust leaks near the sensor either.
Let me share why I got so mixed up with this. When the P0427 code first appeared, my cheap Aliexpress OBD2 reader did actually tell me it was the catalytic converter temperature sensor (the one accessible from the top). However, while I was under the car in a pit one day, I noticed the temperature sensor going into the DPF. It had soldered wires, and based on the part number, it was a cobbled-together Fiat/Alfa Romeo part!
When I unplugged this bottom sensor, the code immediately flipped from "low input" to "high input". Because of that reaction, I was convinced this bottom sensor was the culprit, so I went ahead and replaced it with a new NRF 707206 sensor. Obviously, since it was the wrong sensor for this specific code, it didn't solve the problem. Visually, the wiring for the top sensor looks completely fine too, and there are no leaks around it. What would you advise my next step should be? Should I take it to an auto electrician to properly test the harness, or should I just go ahead and replace the top sensor? If I should replace it, do you recommend a specific brand or part number?
On a separate note, an oil change is coming up soon. I'm currently running Motul 8100 Eco-nergy 0W-30. Oil consumption is very minimal, but the hydraulic lifters are slightly noisy/clicking. I know it's not unusual at 284,000 km, but I'm wondering if a different oil choice could quiet them down a bit.
What oil would you guys recommend? Should I stick with the Motul, switch to the factory-recommended Castrol 0W-30 (A5/B5), or is there another brand that works better for these higher-mileage D5 engines?
Thanks again for all the help!

Are you sure you got the right sensor. "The sensor is screwed directly into the top/inlet pipe of the catalytic converter/DPF canister. On the 2006 S80 D5, this assembly is tucked vertically behind the engine block against the firewall."

Hi Rick,
Yes, now I am sure about the locations!
At first, I replaced the lower sensor (the one accessible from a pit that had the soldered wires). Because the P0427 code flipped from "low input" to "high input" the moment I disconnected it, I focused all my attention on that bottom one. I see now that I was misled and shouldn't have focused on it.
So, turning my attention to the correct upper sensor near the firewall: what replacement do you recommend? Do you happen to have a part number or a specific brand you trust for this top one?
Thanks again!

Hey Rick,
Thanks so much for taking the time to put this list together!
I actually just got some help on a Swedish forum where someone looked up my specific VIN. It turns out my early build needs part number 31370469, so I'm going to go ahead and order that one.
I really appreciate your effort and for pointing me to the top sensor in the first place!
