A word regarding PCV overhaul...

The canister's sole purpose in life is to act as a load balancer for the vacuum being pulled through it. You've got the top port (from the valve cover) and two engine block ports routed into this thing, with one vacuum line pulling out of it.

If you didn't have the canister, you'd have one of those input ports "starving" off the vacuum from the other two.

There is no real vacuum in the oil pan. You have a lot of blow by pressure from the rings. Turbo or non Turbo volvos are notorious for high crankcase pressure. The reason for the canister is to try and catch some of the oil and pass only the pressure as well as a chance to burn any unspent fumes getting past the rings for environmental reasons. If you remove the system i think it is likely you will see an increase in oil loss and likely get a check engine code as well.
