I ordered and took delivery of a '00 V70 non-turbo, manual tranny while I was stationed in Germany. The car had California emissions standards so I could take it back to the states. I loved that car and the manual transmission was a blast. Like they say though, very few made it to the states. Too bad. I had the IPD sport suspension on it and she sat real low to the ground. I have a picture of me driving it at nearly 140mph on the autobahn. The day I took it to Munchen (Munich) for shipment home was a very sad day. I get her back to the states and driving around at 60-70mph felt like I was jogging instead of running. On the autobahn the car purred at 100mph. There is a manual trans 00 V70 for sale at Don Buyer Volvo near Wash D.C. I saw it on autotrader.com

You are correct about the ME7, but the '98's had Motronic 4.4...even some '97 850's had 4.4. The 850's (some '97's) from '96 and earlier had Motronic 4.3....Now, I'm being pedantic....LOL.VCA wrote:...the '99s and up had Motronic ME7, the '98s and prior had Motronic 4.3.

Sorry for hijacking this thread. Just really think this question is an important one. Wondering if there are any updates that we should know about? I'm curious about this 99 V70 I saw on Craigslist today http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/cto/5847042204.html and am not as apprehensive about the high mileage as I am about it not being a 98...
It seems that the 96-98 P80s are in a class by themselves, with the 99, 00, 01s existing somewhere after.
Anyone on here go from a 98 to a 99 and absolutely LOVE it?

There are a lot less PCV troubles on the 1999+ as its warmed by coolant to prevent clogging
Ignition is simplified to just coils and plugs.
Go for the CL one, after the usual suspects. At that price you could part it at good profit

I've had my 99 for about 35,000 miles now. The ETM went out but that's the only 99+-specific failure I've had. Engine bay packaging gets a bit worse with a 99+ turbo car, I guess.
There are differences, but two decades on those differences are less important than how the car has been cared for. On top of that, the ETM is permanently fixable. Expensive, but not a hard job, and the problem goes away forever. I wouldn't let it deter you.

So really, it's a toss up between:
- the simplicity (and thus reliability) of the "less electrical" P80s
vs
- the efficiency and the "more electrical" P80s, (and the possibly more reliable P80)
ETM aside, a P80 is a P80...
I'm so torn.
There's also this one...
http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/cto/5852409972.html
Two cars in that sweet-spot pricepoint. I feel like I've got to make a decision. Especially with my Nissan rusting away... (I tried to put the car on jackstands to replace the inner and outer tie rods and both axles, and it felt like the jackstand would go through the frame. Rust...)

The m56 was the same in these models...I think the brick forum has a comprehensive part number guide on manual transmissions
