Faulty ecm???

Post by marsphoenix24 »

Hi to all Im new to the fourm. Here is my problem my 02 s60 recently has become very hard to start and once it is running it runs rough and you can tell there is a loss of power, there is a check engine light and it has been to the dealer there first diagnosis was the cam sensor but after replacing it there was no change in the cars performance. the dealer did a timing belt on the vehicle 7 months ago and the car had been running fine until recently. after ruling out the cam sensor they traced the fault code and found that there was only 5 volt on the signal wire to the cam sensor from the ecm the dealer is telling me now that the ecm is faulty. has any body experienced this issue with there s60 and if so what was the solution, can the ecm just be reprogrammed?

Welcome to MVS.
The ECU (ECM) hardly ever goes bad on any of these cars.
Find an independent who knows Volvo's.
The dealer will keep doing this and taking your money- I seriously doubt that after spending tons more your issue will be solved. More likely is a wire that is chafed and grounding somewhere.

Hi to all after six weeks in the shop the dealer finally found the cause of the hard starting and running rough, and it was not the ecm; nor was it any of the many sensors they tried. The cause was the timing belt sprocket on the crank shaft had wear on the inside of the sprocket were the crank and sprocket come together allowing play. This was only discovered after the dealer resorted to calling in a specialist from corp. After looking at there info he instructed them to look for this. This was hard to find because every time they would look at the timing mark on the sprocket everything lined up. The specialist said that he had only seen this on one other vehicle. The worn sprocket was sent to Volvo corp. for examination. If anyone is having a similar problem have this checked. I am including the pictures so you know what to look for.

Where in NC are you? Is the crank shot, or just the sprocket. Can't tell form the pix, but it looks like you're in for a new crank.

bshinn, I agree with your assessment of the crank, it does not look good.

marsphoenix24 is Volvo going to warrent the crank, or at least meet you half way? I sure hope so, but with Volvo's poor support on ABS and ETS issues, I wouldn't have much hope.

To other members: If marsphoenix24 has to install a new gear on this crank, what would be the recommendation? Install with JB weld, a loctite product,?????
