2001 C 70 convertible top issues

Post by goldprospector »

I love this site. I have already seen more information here on fixing some of the things wrong with my wifes 2001 C70 convertible. I like the transmission flush thread and I plan on getting to that tomorrow.
The trouble that I am having is with the convertible top. It will not work anymore. When you push the button, the windows will go part of the way down and then the rear window will raise up...but that is as far as it goes. It will do nothing more after that.
If you push the button again, the windows will go down further , but none of the rest of the system will work up or down. I just cant seem to find the problem. I have looked for a Haynes manual on this model, but the year seems to stop at 1997 and they don't offer anything newer. Chilton dosen't have anything either. I have the VADIS manual on CD, but I really can't make heads or tales of that thing. I can't find any troubleshooting pages in it yet.

Any suggestions other than dealerships? Would an after market code tester help? Is there any kind of reset or calibration procedure availible?

Thanks

Sorry, but there are likely one or more "CCU-" stored trouble codes in the Cab Control Unit. That's dealer only, unless you know an independent with VADIS/VIDA or an AutoLogic.

My wife had a similar problem with her C 70 convertible and it turned out to be the inside liner of the double thick top was getting caught in the hinge beside the rear seat and tearing the top. The top motor would just stop rather then tear the top material. Get into the back seat and watch the top as it starts to lift the rear window and raise up to see if youcan see any thiching or pulling of the fabric. Hope this helps

Thats just the thing, the top does not start to lift, it only raises the back window and nothing else...it does not eve unlatch the lock on the windsheild.

Thanks

I'm having the same identical problem. Have you been able to correct the problem?

My problem is similar in that when the hood closes, the windows do not auto close and the warning light and beep to confirm completion of the sequence do not occur. I know the roof is secure but the damn signal continually bleeping as we drive along is infuriating so I am having to blast out ABBA music all the time to drown the noise.
Re 'goldprospector's problem of the rear window part lifting and stopping, my manual says you can at least complete the procedure with the special tools provide to manually open/close the roof- is this not so??
Re my problem - can I silence the sensor and stop the warning beep???

I am having the same issues with the top. I just purchased a 1999 C70. Great to drive. However the top will only lift at the rear window ...I do know that the right side microswitch is out ! The first time i pushed the button to bring the top down ...the rear window lifted with a loud pop! the micro switch was hanging from the top's hook! ( for lack of the parts formal name ) I had another micro switch ordered from the dealer ... I am kinda hestitant installing the new micro switch ...as the same thing might happen again . is there any information on the aligment of these pull down hook type. also, I am not sure what the next phase to opening the top is after the rear window lifts. does the rear boot section open or does the front section of the top is released ??? I dont have a manual to resource

Once the top closes and locks the windows do come up .

I own a 2002 C-70. This car only has 30,000 miles on it. The system malfunctioned. The dealer told me a new potentiameter would do the trick. It did not. I am now told that the only possible way to make the top work ever again is to replace all of the parts for over $7,000. Is there no way to get the top to go up and down manually or override the malfunctioing potentiameter? I want to push the car off of a cliff but I won't.

Mine (2002) works good but the system apparently drains the battery if left for a few days. The mechanic says there are codes displayed that lead him to the top but cannot isolate any further. No charge ... he's a great guy.
Is anyone else getting this type of symptom? The car is great and fun to drive, and I bought it to use the top down (Alabama summers are HOT).
The mechanic says that if I depress the 'close' button with parking brake applied just before I shut the car off, the system seems to be okay. Another option is to take it to the dealer and have them diagnose (min 3 hrs @ $120/hr). I am testing right now and will update everyone later.
I too feel like diving it off a cliff sometimes ...

We are working on a 1999 c70 where the top was not working at all when I got the car.
I replaced the module and now the top goes down all the way into the "convertible box" but when the cover goes down it seems the top mechanism is too tall so when the cover wants to close it forces down too much and I don't want to break anything so I bring the top back up. When it's on the way back up it will stop right when the top gets to 4 inches or so from the front windshield and the cover is still fully open. It's like the top is waiting for the cover to start going down but this doesn't happen! What controls that signal? Is it the microswitch on the passenger side which "closes" when the tensioner is folded forward (telling the cover that it's folded forward giving free path for cover to close)? Or does the potentiometer in the cover or top give this signal? Also, how can I get the top mechanism to come more "Flush" into the convertible box?

Thanks in advance. I know this is an old topic but hopefully someone will have a look!
