I have just order'd a 960 "plate" from Don at waltrip volvo....he said it should ship today..........will post after install....I should have called them first, salvage yards wanted $125.00-235.00. It sounds like I'll have less than 20.00 for the plate, 2 new mounting screws and new gasket, from Waltrip volvo........Ken& thanks for all the help!!

Looks like they've caught on to this trend and are taking advantage of it.

This is one of those strange times when a dealer is cheaper than a salvage yard.

Go back and read carefully...the $125 was for the entire throttle body. He didn't ask for just the plate

Good point, but would a salvage yard sell just the plate? I've only bought from salvage yards a couple times, so I can't comment on the chances of that. One of those times they were reluctant to separate a MAF from the airbox top because it didn't want to come off easily. They would rather stand firm on the price of a MAF + airbox top and not make the sale than risk destroying one or both of those parts.

Whatever the case, even if they did sell the plate alone, after shipping it's likely to be as much or more than the dealer.

It depends on what type of salvage yard it is. If they pull the parts for you, it can be somewhat limited to what kind of parts they will pull for you and the prices will be higher.

If it is a pull a part type yard, I have always heard there is kind of an unwritten rule that if it fits in your pocket, it is free. I have gotten who knows how many nuts/bolts, sensors, switches, etc. for free just because I stuck them in my pocket and never got questioned when I left.

SO I played around with mine again this weekend. Took my body off my car and took it apart. This time I used lead plumbing solder to close the hole. It melts at a much lower temp- and I figure if somehow it works out- its soft so it should pass! (hopefully)
No for a driving update- I have an auto so its not as noticible a difference as with a stick. BUT- It does seem to rev much quicker the butt dyno says its a little faster. The biggest difference I notice is cruising around 2100rpm at 60 mph the car is MUCH more responsive to small pedal movements. Also the MPG computer has gone up quite a bit at this rpm range- maybe an extra 8-10 mpg.
I am going to run a tank thru with the trans on sport and a tank thru with the trans set on economy- I will let you know the difference.
Unfortunatly im 90% around town so I cant give a highway report but results look favorable!

Yes 125.00-235.00 was for the whole throttle body. Here in northern Indiana 960's must not have been to popular as there are zero at the pick/pull type salvage yard....that is why I had no choice but to resort to trying to get a whole throttle body...the customer service at D.W. Volvo was terrific, if you can't locate a throttle body, call them...ask for Don or Jamie.

Nice! I hope your soldering job is solid. I wouldn't want any off that stuff breaking off and going into the engine

This seems like the way to go for most people. I think Volvo is about run out of its 960 throttle plate stock pile shortly. 8)
Ambitious but rubbish
