Airbox thermostat failure...

Completely removed the Y piece, housing the air box flap & extra holes added.

Ok...so back to business...this is a picture I took of my airbox, from the top.

1-> Top of air filter
2-> ???
3-> MAF w/ electrical connection
4-> Cold Air Intake
5-> Warm Air Intake
6-> ???

So what are 2 and 6, and how do I take the MAF,2, and 6 off to get to the Y peice?

I also am dealing with the airbox thermostat, on my 98 S70 non-turbo, which apparently is different than the system on the 850's. I'd like to know how it works - there is a black thin hose that runs from the top of the airbox down to where the airbox thermostat would be. Does anyone know anything about this? I think the hose might be cracked on mine, and am wondering if it's affecting the way the thermostat works. I'm wondering if I can get a replacement hose, or if I should do a cold air intake mod like everyone else seems to be doing.

Just did this today, here is my writeup...

Very straight forward and takes about 25 minutes at most

Nice job! Why not hack out all that extra plastic in the airbox section of the tube? It's just blocking airflow now . . .

I thought about that, but I didn't think it was going to block all that much since all this time I have been driving around with a 1.5 inch hot air intake with the opposite of RAM air principles...

I am going to switch my TB plate to the 960 in the next couple weeks so I will be in that area again.

Thoughts on if cutting the rest out will make any noticeable difference?

I predict it will make 1/2 as much difference as the throttle body plate. After all, restricition is restriction . . .

Great post and pics. I just got my airbox thermostat, but after reading this I left the bad one in and did the mod. The car runs great and I will keep the thermostat in case I need to put it in during the winter time.

Nice to see this modification is picking up some converts. It really goes hand in hand with the 960 throttle plate and larger intake tube. Also remove the maf screens. I cut out the plastic thermostat support and never looked back
